Is this the first broken branch you've had on a tree? It certainly won't kill the tree.

Can you give us a picture of the whole tree?

That would make it easier to judge where the cut should be made.

And what kind of tree is it?

Two or three years ago my tree had a broken branch.

The tree is either Hawthorn, Serviceberry or Pin Cherry.

This one will be easy.

First cut the broken branches off, near the break, to get them out of the way.

With the weight of the broken branch gone, it will be much easier to finish the cut.

Next, like the picture below, cut the final piece off properly by cutting close to the branch collar (left side picture). Use a nice sharp hand saw and don't leave a 'stub' and don't cut into the collar either. Now you're done! :-)

And don't use any sealer or tree goop on the wound. The tree will encapsulate the wound on its own and sealer will interfere with that.

The tree will resprout new branches in time and fill in the open spot left by the branch that was removed.

Is the cut 45° diagonal?

Left side shows a dotted line that is more or less 90d to the branch. That's how you would cut it.

The right side of the picture shows the cut going into the branch collar. That is marked WRONG at the bottom. If you cut into the branch collar, it will take much longer to heal, maybe years.

Are the cut two steps?

First cut - easy.

Final cut - careful.

When cutting the branch, I first cut into the bottom side of the branch, just a short distance, to get through the bark and sap wood.

Then finish cutting from the top of the branch.

That way, you're not as likely to tear the bark at the bottom of the branch accidently.

Are the cut three steps?

First cut - from the bottom of the damaged branch.

Second cut - from the top of the damaged branch. This is to remove the weight of the broken branch.

Final cut - careful.
