Why didn't he just remove the extra oil instead of sanding it?

Removing excess oil was the simple and easy solution.

Shiny soapstone is usually because someone tried to polish it, rather than use a low grit and just hone it.

Sm please show pictures of unevenly sanded shiny soapstone. i was not able to follow thread . thank you!!!

jilljimmom - you mention 3 year old soapstone. Are you the original owner or did you acquire this soapstone when you bought your home? Do you know the name of this particular soapstone?

I am looking into PA Original soapstone (sometimes called Stormy Black). It is supposed to be a relatively hard variety of soapstone. The slabs I recently saw in person at a stone yard had a even shiny/glossy appearance. I was told that the factory where they got the slabs had likely used a 600 grit polishing or sanding. On a very small sample piece, the employee took a 320 grit wet sanding (using a handheld sander and a water spray bottle) to show me how I can achieve a lighter color and a more matte appearance. I really prefer the lighter color and the non-shiny appearance. I do not plan to oil or wax.

It is helpful reading these comments and also the other threads mentioned, here. I have more homework to do in the next 6 months before purchasing.

Out of curiosity, could you post photos of your soapstone from a bit further away and maybe some photos with natural lighting/light coming from a window?
