I understand wanting to get rid of the wood and lighten things up, but honestly, that might not be the greatest idea. Wood hides nicks, scratches, and dents better than paint does. Do you remember what species of wood that is? Depending on the wood it might be more of a long term solution to refinish the base cabinets and paint the uppers. Are you open to that two toned look? You wouldn’t necessarily need a dark stain, you could possibly go lighter. It all depends on the wood - and your taste.

Paint the oven / fridge side white along w the couple of wall cabs…then later if you still want to change the rest try a hale navy for the lowers. big space w obvious ways to do two finishes.

Yea I understand what you’re saying. I put white cabinets in my last house and they were all chipped up after a year. That’s why I went with dark in this house. I like the idea of starting with the uppers to see if that brightens it up. I don’t get a lot of light in this room so it feels dark and dingy. Unfortunately, I can’t remember what kind of wood it is.

Fix your lighitng issue with a better lighting plan. Touch up your cabinets with a touch up kit. Then pause. You can always end up painting later. But, even a white kitchen in a dim room is going to be a "dark kitchen" without better lighting.

Not sure what to do because I don’t have an island. I was going to just put in a regular light fixture but I’m not sure if that will look weird. Do I have to do recessed lighting in there you think?

Recessed, under cabinet, semi flush, and maybe some pendants. That track lighting is the room's biggest issue, bar none. Once you get that fixed, and can SEE the space properly, it won't seem dark, and you may want to go another route. Lighting is always first.

Forget about the cabinets for right now. Paint isnt the answer to your problem. You need more lighting in that kitchen. Paint will never make a kitchen lighter, only lighting can do that. Once you get the kitchen light and brighter, then its time, to think about what to do with the cabinets. Paint will eventually chip as you have found out, because, its obvious, your kitchen gets a lot of use. You are better off, to have someone refinish the lower cabinets, the same color they are now. Your uppers look to be in much better condition. Once you get them refinished, then please make sure you only wipe them down with plain water, so they stay nicer for a much longer period of time. Use a microfiber cloth, and dry them with a dry towel, as you clean them.

One bit of advice - if those cabinets are maple, they will blotch, they won’t stain. If you are going to try to refinish the lowers, start with the inside of a rarely used door (experience talking 😂).
