Help! Front curb appeal!

I have literally no idea of what to do with my front door porch - I need an overhead and to replace rusty railing. We can’t move the stone to center and because such a steep drop, need the steps to stay to the side. Do I do a portico? Columns? Sailing wire? I’m clueless and have searched high and low for images but all front door porches have centered with walkway - All ideas welcome!!

Did you add those dormers? Reason I need an overhead is all my packages and friends get wet - there is absolutely no coverage and it drives me bonkers. But if you’re telling me a portico would look bad - I’ll have to revisit probably selling the house. (Yes - I can’t stand the front as I’m used to classic colonial) 😩

With what you have, it will be difficult to do an addition that doesn't look like it was just tacked on. I would be looking to sell because of the garage under too! We did that with our first house that had a garage under and no cover over the front door ... sold it after 4 years.

If you feel that you can’t live without a porch/door covering, you should sell. It ultimately wouldn’t give you the look you are wanting or imagining, and you’ll have a better chance of finding an exterior you love if you choose to sell and look at other houses. Good luck!

Not sure how much more this will protect your packages.

A package receiver box might be a better direction.

You might be able to get a portico if you extend the stoop out, that said, I think you want to look at overhangs. You could probably keep your friends dry on the stoop in the rain. Packages will might stay dry in drizzle, but not driving rain.

Overhangs also come in contemporary styles.

At most I might suggest a shallow (almost flat roofed ) front porch beginning at your door and extending over the double window to the right. Leave your sidewalk where it is now…centered on the front of that area, not directly to your front door. The options for short canopies, I think, will look better on your home. A delivery “safe” for packages would be a nice addition, even down at the garage level. Neighbors of mine have created a sort of door flap IN their garage door to facilitate package delivery. That would also spare delivery people having to climb your steps!

You could have a metal awning fabricated that slides under the overhang and keep it simple.

Below is an illustration of my suggestions, a change in colour scheme for a softer look with a simple metal awning above the front door (easy to install and no construction necessary).

One thing that drives me crazy is a beautiful door color and then leaving the grilles white. Paint them to match the door, please

Some great suggestions above. One thing you MUST do is to remove the fake shutters - they look ridiculous and not sure why people put them on. Only real shutters that work are OK to have - in stormy areas of the country. And - changing the front could help if you ever buy a new large piece of furniture. I lived in a place once with a 90 degree turn to the doors with railing like that did not allow me to get a piano in the door and removing the railing was not an option - Hope you get that issue solved. That house reminds me of one I rented (almost identical in looks) and hated - tuck-under garages are great places to allow mice in and then to get into the house.

I completely agree with the more dramatic painting suggestion. I would also suggest widening and extending your porch all the way to the end of your house on the side away from the garage with a complimentary roof line. You might also consider going to a double door if possible. The key is to change the focus of the front of your house from the garage side to the rest of the front

What if you added a covered front porch across the whole front of the house?! That would de-emphasize the garage and allow the front entry to get more focus?

All these suggestions are great! Thank you!
