I just bought my first home (duplex) and i wanted to go with a more updated exterior color change on shutters and doors. The vinyl is beige. The front landscaping is not appealing either. i stained the wood stairs but now i dont know what to do because i dont know if it was the right thing to do. i want a more modern style look.

    Congratulations on your first Home!

The new stair stain color is great. It adds a nice rich contrast.

You could add a white ledger board as trim, just above the windows and side door, and give the house a high-waisted look.

Here is a cool-toned Charcoal gray for the lower siding and the peaks. Ligher Blue/gray on the upper portion. Black shutters, white trim.

Not sure about the doors, probably stay the same.

replace the doors to a full view glass, or remove the inserts to see if that will work for you.

I personally would remove the shutters.

I like the changes tracefloyd made and I would remove the shutters as well, as Lyn Nielsen suggested. Also, the rounded windows on the doors are not a particularly "modern" look -- if you could get doors with squared windows instead, it would look more modern.

    Here are my suggestions:

    - remove the shutters and enlarge the frames around the windows

    - paint the shingles in the gables the same colour as the siding

    - replace the 2 front doors for black ones in the same style as your windows

    - replace the 2 porch lights for ones in a more modern style

    - work on some landscaping under the porch and elsewhere possible (we can't see the entire property

My husband likes the shutters if i were to keep them would i paint them the same color as the doors?

You can keep the shutters of course. In my rendering of the blue/gray two-tone, the shutters are there in one of them....supposed to be black.

The shutter and door colors depend on the body and trim colors. What colors do you like for the house? Decide on that first.

Maybe you can discuss the shutters with your husband and convince him to change his mind about them. Shutters must be able to close (or look like they can close) and cover the windows. (I don't want to put that last part in caps lest you think I am shouting.) Shutters such as yours don't do that and they do not enhance the appearance of your otherwise attractive house. The rendering by tracefloyd directly above with the new paint, new doors, some simple landscaping, and windows with grids will make your house the envy of the neighborhood.

The house with shutters back on. And, I prefer having only the white trim around the 2 front doors, not the section in the middle. You'd have to ad some wood work in the centre so that ilt looks properly done.

my vinyl sidin is beige will the black shutters be ok? what color for the doors? Thank you

Have the shutters match the wood stain on the stair. Don’t introduce black with the brown wood stain.

Black and beige go well together with the white accent on the windows. The French style doors I show are also black. Here's an example of a house in beige siding, black shutters , black door and white trim.
