Holy mackerel - I just ran a test sample through the cart to see what the bottom line would be. For the 6 Jalbert roses I had in my cart, the shipping was going to be $144 to Nebraska!! Even with 30% off the roses themselves, the bill would have been $300+ for those six roses. That's too rich for my tastes particularly with a mixed review at best from OneLove roses. I think I need to avoid temptations and seek out my Jalbert roses elsewhere. They seem to be gradually showing up in more places. Hopefully the Tantau roses will do the same before long.

I have no comments on Chamblee's as I’ve never ordered from them but I took a peek at their Jalberts and that Maui Sunrise is hard to resist! Fortunately for me it’s out of stock or I would be your guinea pig 😄

Regarding price, I have found the cost of roses have gone up a lot since I started my first garden only 12 years ago. Currently shipping an order from Heirloom or J&P for 6 roses will run you at least $300 (not accounting for sales). While places like ARE can be a bit cheaper per rose (and they just raised their prices last year) it often evens out once you add shipping since Heirloom offers free shipping for orders over $100 and places like J&P have very low shipping costs. In the end I’ve found it pretty much a wash price-wise no matter who I order from unless I am ordering bands and even they are all priced similarly for me so long as I stay local.

I do wonder if Chamblee’s shipping is the same outside of this sale, I have seen this sometimes where the final price with or without a sale is the same and the difference is in the shipping ”cost”. Kind of shady but no idea if that is the case here.

Could be that these are really big plants.

Cynthia , the roses i received from chamblees were excellent. Two were jalberts and were full size 2 gallons ( I honestly thought they were bigger than 2 but that’s what they claim on the site . ) they hadn’t been hacked back or anything. One was a rooted rose from their one love side , a gallon and was smaller , would be easier to ship. Definitely smaller tho . I wouldn’t hesitate to order from them again , if I had room . I believe Markay posted excellent review as well .

I think the plant size is why they are expensive now to ship .

I hate how expensive shipping has gotten for roses . I can’t even order from roses unlimited unless I want to pay a ton . I mostly order from heirloom with the free shipping.

I do agree that the shipping costs are from the size of the plants - they advertise 2 or even 3 gallon plants - so that is a valid and important reason for the shipping costs as Heather and Erasmus and Lilyfinch point out. It's just that I don't want to pay a total of $50 per rose if I can help it. I order so many roses that I have to be a bit cautious about how much I spend, even though I'm spending from my "fun money" account that I build up from doing extra work tasks like giving workshops.

I do a bulk order from Roses Unlimited which substantially reduces the shipping, and I order from ARE when they do their free shipping specials around holiday times - as I recall Black Friday and/or Valentine's Day. I know this cuts into their profits but I order a lot of roses so hopefully it evens out at least. In the case of OneLove, the 30% off is around $60 for the 6 roses but the shipping is $144 so it's not close to free shipping.

Kristine that is so wonderful that Palatine will be able to sell many more Jalbert roses this year! I love their bare roots and pace the floor eagerly watching for the orders to open up in December. Here's hoping they'll be able to offer other roses like Ascot and Augusta Luise before too long too.

Nice to see that the plants from OneLove were big and healthy. It justifies the price, I'm just cheap. Kristine, I have Our Anniversary from Palatine this year and it is a steady bloomer. It does go a bit hot pink in the hot sun but keeps much of that purple tinge even then. I also have Maui Sunrise from Regan's this year too Heather, and it's drop dead gorgeous contrasts of gold and rusty orange. That alone is evidence that Jalbert roses are getting around - yay! If you get a chance to buy Peach Perfection it's a nonstop blooming machine of apricot blooms that just doesn't fade to cream at all. Small plant so you can absolutely fit it in even if your garden is "full".

I received my order, but yeah… I was going to warn you about the eye popping shipping costs. If it helps, I’ve heard the Heirloom has worked a out a deal and will be carrying Jalbert roses in the near future.

Oooh, great more options for Jalbert roses! I can deal with Heirloom if they have sales because I usually buy enough roses to qualify for free shipping on top of it. Thanks for the heads-up Markay!

Vaporvac - hmm, I checked my records and you were right. The Thanksgiving sale was 30% off roses not free shipping. However since the roses already START at a reasonable price at ARE the 30% off still made the shipping worth it and much less than $50 a bush. Besides, the Shoup shrub roses tend to do really well in my dry heat once established. If you ever get to order Twilight Princess it's an amazing grape purple very double bloom that is rock solid hardy in zone 5. I don't have pictures sorted from the last several years, but she's a real unique rose and a keeper.
