Should wood ever be used under travertine coping?

Is this ever acceptable? Should I have my builder rip this out and pour a concrete collar around this pool or is this the latest and greatest coping construction technique? I see all kinds of problems down the road? Curious what your thoughts are.

NO! The wood will rot and the coping stones will no longer have support. Future problems here.

When we built vinyl pools many years ago, we poured a concrete footer around the pool perimeter about 18" deep and at least 6" wide to fully support a 12" coping stone.

We also would add some rebar to reinforce the concrete pour. The rebar must be electrically bonded to meet the NEC requirement.

Using the wire mesh is fine as the top of the pool panel is smooth and won't allow the setting material to bond.

That's what I was afraid would happen when I saw this. I guess you can either take the 2x4s out now or they will rot themselves out eventually. Thanks for commenting.
