Are you wanting to chit your small ones for replanting now? Indirect sunlight, don't leave them out in the sun. Leave them on your counter or in a paper bag till they chit. If you mean you want to use them for seed potatoes next year, don't wash them, though brushing off dirt is OK. Cure them in a cool dry place and store them in a cool dry place to use next year. Make sure there is good ventilation/air flow in your storage.

Shorter season "determinate" types that have short storage like 'Red Gold' you may be able to double crop (grow two crops in a year), but I don't know how to force them. They may resprout in the ground if you put them back. It is hot July, so they might just rot before they grow.

I left my unused Spring potato seed pieces in a box in my garage, dark and dry. They are useable and have many sprouts that are short and stubby. It gets warm in my garage in warm weather, so they are not kept cool. I planted old 'German Butterball' seed potatoes in a grow bag a week ago and they are already visibly growing. Now will I get much to eat in September? I already had everything so only my time is wasted. I can move the bag out or into full sun.

I usually follow my potatoes with fall carrots seeded in late July and by September I'll have a few volunteer potato plants popping up among the carrots. When I've bothered to dig up the potatoes in November there wasn't much there except quarter sized marbles.

IT depends on the variety of potato. I don't think you'll have enough time for them to grow very large potatoes, but I'd probably still try. Do not put them in the sun, however, store them somewhere dark and dry.

I have Kennebec, Red Pontiac and a couple of fingerling types growing right now, all from last year's leftover potatoes which I store in my back room in milk crates. I use them all winter and by spring I have sprouts, sometimes 2 feet long, which I trim down to 3 or 4 inches and plant the potatoes, but they wait until next year, I haven't tried to plant for two harvests.

I've done this for at least 20 years, although I've occasionally purchased some other types like Yukon Gold. The potatoes are uncut and unwashed and although they will shrivel or wrinkle a bit, they seldom rot. They are stored in milk crates stacked on top of each other to utilize the space more efficiently and so I can keep them by variety. I go through them periodically and toss out the rotten ones so they don't compromise the rest.

You have now reminded me that I need to go see if I have some reds big enough to use as "new potatoes" in some creamed potatoes.
