Update Plain House

The design dilemmas are my favorite part of Houzz. The responses always amaze me. Our house needs to be updated. Curb appeal also needed. Any suggestions are appreciated!

This is such a great house! it doesnt need ”updating.” i agree that the shutter size seems off.

trim the shrubs, powerwash, and paint the door a light color.

Beautiful house, except for the bright white garage door, I would tone that down by painting it to coordinate better with the brick. Trim back shrub that is blocking view of your entrance. Paint outside door and frame to match the main door, and perhaps like Lyn said a lighter color for both doors.

Your house is lovely, I suppose you just need a change. For a more updated look I would paint all the white trim black including the garage door. Lose the shutters, they are not the correct size for the windows. Purchase large house numbers in black and run them vertically beside the garage. Then hire a professional landscaper. I would remove the large bush in front of the steps and redesign the entrance extending the steps so they are not so short. Having new hardscape along with new soft scape will transform your look.

Great suggestions here. I would also consider painting any downspouts to blend with the brick.

Replace cement driveway with a coordinating paver driveway.

    Landscaping.

Nice house, needing only a few tweaks to elevate appeal.

Lalagirl is right on about shutters.

Agree house numbers can be larger.

Big bush obscuring the entrance needs reduction and maybe some colorful low growing plants around it to highlight the entrance path.

The stairs to door appear shallow and skimpy...would a deeper platform enhance safety and provide space for flower pots?

Just a few changes will help.

I agree remove the shutter in fact I like many of the ideas already posted . My big thing would be a huge do over of the landscaping so the entry becomes the focal point and the garge door needs to be a color from the brick I honestly see no reason for a storm door if a screen is a must then get a Phantom so your front door is the star. Anew light in the entry another for the new vertical house #s make it match the new entry one . I always like a walkway to a front door from the street not the only one from the driveway.

Thank you all for your wonderful ideas! Keep them coming.
Should the front door, gutters and garage door all be the same brick color?

Dark garage color, light porch color door and screen door, new landscaping in front of house by removing the big shrubs first.

Please post another photo from the street. There is some sort of tree in a stone covered bed to the right side of your bump out. We need a photo of the entire home.

New garage door (or paint) that is a similar color to your house. Remove the large shrub blocking the entry, the two skinnies flanking the window, and trim the remaining bush in front of the window. Re-landscape. You need a full glass storm door and paint the front door and the storm door frame the same pretty color. Power wash the sidewalk. It’s a wonderful house, not plain at all.🙂🏠

Here is a color concept sketch. Wood garage door and wide wood shutters sized to the windows. White trim. Blue front door.

I love the all of your green lancscaping. Remove the plant in front of the door. Add more gravel rock there and inset some big flagstones. Make a nice little patio.

I would paint the garage door dark for a little drama. Have someone install some nice lights over the top of the doors ( 2 or 3 depending on size ), take down the shrub in front of the door and put something more colorful and lower growing, change the shutters to wider ones ( they are too narrow), paint the door and make the house numbers bigger.

    Good luck!
