For me accnet wall color is chosen to go with something in the space not just pulled out of a hat. I have an accent wall in my kitchen for instance it was chosen to go with the orange of my stools . I see nothing to go with that wall and now you are trying to make something go with it .Paint that wall the same as the rest THe TV is the TV so if you want to not have a black hole either get a Frame TV of hook up a system to show photos on the screen it is pretty easy to do apparently I am not techy so can't tell yu exactly how to do that.I would do a nice simple console table on that wall next to the TV with amybe a lmap on it and some art above it would add a nice transition fro LR to DR

I don't think it was necessarily a bad idea, but the color is just looks too dark to me. It seems to be swallowing all the light in the room. You do have other black things in the space, so it should work, yet somehow it doesn't (which is I'm sure why you're asking the question). I don't know how many coats of white paint you would need to cover it if you decide to have all the walls the same color. I think I would try a lighter (but still dark) color first. What color is the accent wall exactly (brand and color)?

Agree that it should be same color as the other walls. The bookcase half over the tv makes for an unbalanced composition, and having it hang there makes me feel uneasy as it looks unsupported. It also feels like it is all cowering in the corner and doesn’t have any breathing room. Don’t mean to be critical and I know you didn’t ask, but this might be one reason that the whole thing feels off.

99% of the time I hate an accent wall, but yours looks great and serves a real purpose.

The color of the accent wall in the living room is a really great counterpoint to the rust and oranges of your throw and objects on your shelves. It echos your dark site table, and it pops against your furniture.

The problem is not your wall, but that your dining room 1. feels incomplete, and 2. doesn't have any colors that relate to the wall.

I'd consider a rug in the dining room that plays with the wall color. The large artwork to the left of the kitchen doorway - can that be placed above your buffet instead? It just feels off there and across from the accent wall would give a nice sense of play between the two walls. I'd consider another tall plant for the corner where the accent wall meets the white wall. Temporarily try placing the vase of tall twigs that is hanging out in the other corner. Maybe some kind of artwork makes sense on either side of the kitchen door but the one you have there now is too big.

As for the living room, I have 2 camel color leather chairs ordered to replace the rattan ones and will be getting a new rug but haven't decided on a pattern. (The tv wall is in front of the sofa.) I'd like to put a large scale painting somewhere in there.

personally, I don't think it is the dark wall, it's the furniture arrangement and the console + the white cubbies.

I can't see enough of the room to see where best to move them, but I'd start with moving the concole to the dining room or that long wall near the seating area. the cubbies could be better utilized in the dining area... have you tried this already? please add more photos so we can see the whole space.

I'm not loving the accent wall color or the asymmetric wall unit.

I don’t mind the black wall since you have several black accents in the room. I like your current rug but think a darker rug that pulls the black onto the floor would help connect your spaces visually. I like the tower shelf to the left of the tv but think the top piece of that that goes above the tv is a little heavy looking so I’d remove that.
I’d also suggest moving your framed artwork to above the console in the dining space. While it fits on the wall where it currently is, that space would be better served with something vertical. Maybe try putting the tree over in that corner instead. Add a little bit of greenery into the vase on dining table. Something like ivy or that has a bit of drape to it.

Looks like you’ve got some unframed pics in your living room. If they’re the right size those would look nice between the tv and the window.

So the "art" to the left of the kitchen entry is another TV?

With the white shelves in the LR and the glass door buffet in the DR, it may be a lot of open shelves with the bar cart you show.

The half bookcase makes the tv area unbalanced, and I think that is what feels "off". I would try to set the tv on the console to give the bookshelf more breathing room, and move the plants to the tv console a tad bit, and maybe you'll like the composition better.

Since many of you are addressing things besides that gray wall, I know now that you're all too sharp and thorough to just take part of my plan to give me input. So, here's more details on my very unfinished space:

1. Yes, there's 2 TVs that show art whenever somebody comes into the rooms. Those were my husband's idea and after 50 years of my decorating all our homes, I felt I needed to give some concessions to his point that it is his home too.

2. Furniture placement, etc: There's a bump in the wall behind the plants that precludes my moving them. I wouldn't have them there either if not for this. For various reasons, I also can't move the LR TV or the console. They were built into that brick wall. You enter the room from behind the couch so it was intended to be the focal area of the room. Also, the view outside those two sliding doors in the LR is in the middle of 100 year old trees that are scene steelers when the sun isn't shining directly on those doors, which is what was happening when I took these pics.

3. . Any art work you see in the pics is temporary. I plan to put something organic in an unstructured shape on the wall to the left of the window. Or, maybe this, if the wall gets painted white. If not, I'll put it somewhere else as I love the form of it:

4. The gray wall paint color is BM Kendall Charcoal #HC-166.

5. So far, I plan to incorporate the following from your wonderful ideas:

• I'll put a closed cabinet or maybe a large rattan trunk under the DR TV to hide the wires and outlet so I don't have another open shelf. Don't know what color but you're right about not having more open shelving.
• I'll replace the LR rug with some black in it. I'm determined to make this a low maintenance home so I don't want a rug under the dining room table.
• The ash wood dining table was custom made and just delivered yesterday and I was told not to put anything on it for a week but I was planning on a cream vase with greenery sitting on a black linen oval placemat on it.
• Yep, plan to put something vertical on the wall where the framed art is now. Large scale something?

It seems like about the responses to my original question about whether to paint to gray wall white to match the other walls is running about even. Dang - I was hoping for a clear winner on the question.

I know a lot of people don't like accent walls, but I'm one of those that do. I'd keep it and reconsider when you get everything else in place, especially art.

I like what you have done so far.

Here are some suggestions to take with a grain of salt.

Can you make a mirror image of the white bookshelves on the right side of the console?

I think that might give you a feeling of a built in unit that is designed to frame the TV. Install it, and then use 30 per cent of the shelves to add accessories in one accent color you love from your art work on the shelves. Propped up plates, vases, candle holders, bowls, etc. Fill in with 30 Per cent books on shelves that will add more color to the mixm, and 30 per cent space, or just put one large item on in shelf in the same color to make the book shelves the focal point. Or plants of 30 percent of the shelves.

Put both pieces of the large art next to each other over the console in the dining room with the horizontal picture centered next to the the vertical picture both centered on the console wall. Place the two round black twig wall hangings on either side of the entry to the kitchen, with possibly Chinese garden stool or any fabric cube under each one in a punchy color from the painting or a pair of small chairs for extra pull up seating.

Place the big round mirror over the wall behind the sofa and add a short chest orconsole for keys, purse, etc.

Hang some print curtains on window in the dining room from floor to ceiling, two panels on each side going about 8-10 inches beyond the window on each side with a black rod and grommet curtains ( easy to find ready made I think). Or some variation of this; you will find what you like when you play with it for a while....lol.

And, yes, I do like the accent wall. Share your thoughts.
