Just saw this. My first memory of him was an album my parents had. Well done, Mr Newhart.

Another great comic gone, there were so many good comic actors but today not much to write home about. Something killed comedy, and I have my suspicions but will leave it there. Rebel Wilson is good.

They seem to be dropping like flies!

I too enjoyed his sense of humor and his TV show. Some of his comedy routines were really funny.

IIRC, I think he and Don Rickles were good friends. And while their on stage appearance Bob was nice and Don was an insult machine, in real life, Don was a sweetheart and Bob had the temper. Go figure.

I just see that Lou Dobbs died too at 78. I'll refrain from comment.

Yeah, Lou Dobbs. I agree with what you’re not saying.

Always loved Bob Newhart. Best series finale ever.

My parents had a couple of his albums, we loved them. And his first comedy series played on that ”listen and respond” style. We still refer to the exterior of his condo building as ”Bob Newhart’s building”. Of course none of his opening credits scenes made sense to a Chicagoan, but if he could go along with it, we could too.

He is one of the first comics I recall. Loved his deadpan humor. A life well lived that many of us benefitted from.

No comment about Dobbs. I loved Newhart for years, especially on Letterman. He was a funny man.

Bob Newhart, one of the greats. Along with Tim Conway, George Gobel, Flip Wilson & even Bill Cosby, way back. Loved Bob & Emily.

One of my favorite Bob Newhart skits:

    Stop it😅😅

I remember when Newhart was Grand Marshall in the Rose Parade.

I loved his work. His wife had passed with the year too.

Newhart was interesting from one perspective - during his career, a different comedy style evolved and became popular. Everyone should be familiar with what I'll call the style that was a bit more "edgy". Whether because of the language used, or topics covered like politics or other current events, personal relationships more explicitly, racial issues, etc. Maybe there were others too. Neither better or worse than others, just different.

Newhart remained with the more traditional G-rated content while some of his contemporaries, like George Carlin as an example, shifted to the newer style. Carlin's career remained in nightclubs and cable TV shows while Newhart's approach led to much broader popularity and presumably financial success on broadcast TV. Not necessarily for that reason, he did what he did extremely well.

I love the Newhart ending where it was all a dream and Suzanne was there, harkening back to The Bob Newhart show. Really loved him on Big Bang, far after his career should have been over, but he was just having fun.

I'm sorry Lou Dobbs has died. Regardless of anyone's politics, I'm sorry a human being is no more. His friends and family miss him, I'm sure.

The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.

    Mahatma Gandhi

Gandhi himself could be quite foolish in his conduct, having forgiven a group of fanatics who tried to kill him. A later attempt by the same group was successful. Before his ultimate murder happened he'd said:

"If I am to die by the bullet of a madman, I must do so smiling. " Hardly good advice to follow or a comment to emulate.

I read a bio of him not too long ago.

Quotes taken out of context are like ignorantly snatched soundbytes, good intentions don't mask a misunderstood reality.

Judd Apatow did a wonderful short documentary on the friendship between Bob and Don and their families.

Jupidupi- that clip you shared from Newhart was just wonderful!

Thank you thank you thank you. I still have the loose cheeks and happy glow from watching it a few moments ago, and I've already shared it with others.

I just had DH watch it and he was genuinely legitimately laughing out loud.

(hmmm ,maybe we should start a thread of good laughoutloudclips to brighten the day))

Never found Bob Newhart funny, though sorry he died. George Carlin on the other hand...

I also heard that Bill Viola died. I thought he was profound and masterful artist. Dead at 73 from a long bout with Alzheimer's. Horrible.

Without diminishing respect for very funny people like Newhart whose style was in the more traditional vein, I too preferred the edgy approach. Carlin at the top of the list.

How did I miss this? I loved BOB!
