That whole staircase would not pass code in the US so I assume you are not there . Not really understanding the panels at all and no real idea of the rest of the spac e. I see traditional windsor chairs and modern seating just not really understanding the staircase rail at all. I guess we need info for sure

I would consider replacing the timber panels with a railing (to code) which will open up the staircase letting some light through.

Considering you want to keep the area bright, pick I'd pick a color that is in the stone(tile?) floor a warm off-white. The panels on the walls along the stairs could be variations of light blue (sky colors) . giving a nod to the sky gives you an open airy feeling, but keep it on the lighter shades. Looks like a fun staircase. Good Luck.

I would not do black or another very dark color. Those stairs can be tricky to navigate- you need all the light you can get. I would keep the same color or a color that exists in the room.

This belongs in the Death Stairs group on FB. Scary as heck, especially with no railing.

The panels sticking up upstairs ... they look like tombstones!
