You may find a square nosing a bit more conducive to toe stubbing and tripping, because a sharp corner is a little less forgiving than a rounded one. And rounded also compensates a bit more for the allowable variation between riser height which is 1/4" or under. Especially if you don't wear shoes indoors.

Also the rounded edge is less prone to chipping wearing or splintering.

If you want to do a square edge, it's fine, but you should be aware of the reasons why you don't see it as much as rounded.

You may need to buy actual European Oak or White Oak stair treads, cut the nosings square and stain them to match, you will have to get ones deep enough to be cut down to create the edge.

Simply glue and finish nail solid matching oak nosing on to the tread.

Good looking stuff. All eight footers. Those Asian folks are on the right page. In other words, they've come a long way since the first stuff arrived in the late 90's. I remember one bamboo company hand brush finished every plank which was visible. Plenty of other stories.

When it comes to a square edge. First off that's misleading. Most of my tread customers that choose something other than the common profile go with a 1/8" round-over/eased edge. Cool 'clean' look in my eye.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I’ve seen it in almost every new home in our area with hardwood on the stairs. It’s definitely eased. Similar to an eased edge on a 3 CM slab of quartz. It still has a squared off look but isn’t sharp.

I’ll put up with the occasional stubbed toe to get the look I want.

I like the idea of getting a regular tread and trimming off the rounded edge. We’ll just have to have our contractor match the stain, which shouldn’t be too hard. I think it’s just a clearcoat.

I love the look of the squared off edge - we had an open staircase with large slabs and the squared edges - I can’t remember stubbing my toes, but it did chip (so I must have stubbed them with shoes on!)

Why not just a deeper tread that is squared on the edge .

I'm not sure what you mean. The manufacturer of this flooring only offers a rounded tread. I'm not committed to this flooring if I can find something similar that offers a squared-off edge.
