Hosta Emperor New clothes

Anyone is getting one?

It is creation by Hans Hansen from Empress Wu. I am hearing nurseries will be getting liners and getting ready to sell 2026.

From what I understand Hans has a team of people at Walters that does hybridizing for him and is very specific on what he wants so his results are fantastic.

Hi lindalana, I just looked at it in the HL… what an amazing looking hosta. I could see why hybridizers would want this. I’m afraid it would be so expensive and it would die on me. Lol

Maybe when it’s come down in price if it ever does. Might be like Dorothy Benedict, always expensive.

I am looking at Emperor's New Clothes too, I will look when it come out and might wait a few years till the price comes down. I also don't want to kill an expensive prima dona. So for now I will look at all the beautiful pictures of it.

It sounds like most liners will be ready next year, it seems only speckled and not streaked. Which might it be easier to clone this bringing cost to be reasonable.

I would love to know more about any issues, as I bought one and have it in a pot still. Don't want to plant if it's going to bring trouble!

The ’my hosta database’ indicates it is a mutation. I dont recall sports so abruptly different from a parent. I wonder if it was a chemically induced mutation? At any rate, its too non traditional for my tastes. I will pass.

IGG, I'd plant it out and give it a chance to put on some size, your plant looks fine to me...

Are there any available out there? Every website that I have seen says that it's sold out.

Last year I got an Elle plug from NH hostas, but it didn't come back this spring. I also didn't see any online. I saw the one pictured above in a small local nursery and snapped it up.

Update, from Hans Hansen himself who was at Nationals, Emperor's New Clothes hosta should be avail next year. They are having too many Frog in My Throat coming out of TC when producing ENC aka as with most streaked / misted hostas % of correct type is low which makes production very expensive. Since hosta affictionados are not primary clientele for them ENC will be not in demand for regular gardeners. But the they are building inventory. I think it is gorgeous plant.

So Frog in My Throat is a failed ENC? "It's not a bug, it's a feature!" :)

@miles10612, you might give NH Hostas a call. They did sell Elle plugs of it last year, and might have a plant or two hiding in a corner.

Hornbaker has it in quantity, but it's salty:
