Shutters on three pane window?

We are getting new siding soon and getting rid of the brick. I would like to put shutters on the large three pane window on the left. I’m reading that “real” shutters should only go on windows they could actually close over (if you used them as shutters, which we won’t). Several houses in our neighborhood have a similar home and I think the shutters look nice - but just as a decorative touch. Thoughts?

Your home looks very MCM. Shutters do not fit that style.

    No, please.

While your at it, why not replace the awful leaders with rain chain systems?

No to fake shutters. Redo the gutters and maybe get rain chains. New landscaping will make the area look much more interesting than shutters would.

Yes the house needs landscaping not shutters. Sad to see the brick and vertical siding go.

Your home is lively as is! No shutters and I hope you reconsider and keep the brick and siding. Rain chains are a new idea to me and I think they’ll look great.

IMO the brick would stay and no shutters even fak on a triple window ever .The siding just needs painting to work with the brick not removing the best part of the house which BTW often instantly devalues your home . Landscaping and a nice color for the siding both a lot better thsn removing the brick or adding sillt useless shutters . What is wrong with the siding ? I sure hope not rplacing that with cheap vinyl either You have a MCM ranch do not make it some fake idea from your neighbors

Please don't ruin your home: )

Paint the siding, get the landscaping cleaned up and refreshed.

The gutters ARE a tragedy and no amount of other add on will fix. Rain chains! They come in a million styles.

You aren't turning a mid cen to a modern farm house, nor a colonial , with any success. So don't even attempt that.,,,,,,,,,"remuddle".

It's a classic....rambler mid cen. Lots of them were bright

    Or not

    Absolutely no shutters

The problem with the brick is I do not like the color at all. Hard to tell in the photo but it is a yellowish white. But I don’t like the idea of painted brick, so I figured better to take it down. It is just a thin layer of brick that is not structural to the home.

Paint the downspouts the same color as the siding. If you keep the brick, that means blue on top and cream on the bottom.

I like the brick. I don't think you need shutters on that window. I'd skip them.

Your brick colour is called blonde brick and was an upgrade from red brick. The dark blue colour isn't doing it any favours, and if you're not 100% decided on removing it, you could consider a softer and lighter colour to complement it. Matching your mortar is a tried and true look.

Either way you go, I don't think shutters will complement your window style. You already have 3 long rectangles, and 2 more will be odd looking.

I love the look of your deep eaves.

A pale sage would tie together your brick and brown roof.

Definitely work on landscaping and hardscaping. Golden flagstone pathway would look great and enhance the house as would MCM planting beds.

I'd do a board and batten type of siding, and paint the brick. you can use a good masonry paint from Romabio that doesn't need any maintenence. why not try it first before you go thru the cost of removing it? can't hurt. you can get some samples.

this is what the Moderne White looks like (you can have it tinted any color)

Those gutters/spouts are horrific. there has to be someone that can rework that look.

a more modern front door and landscaping will make that house come alive.

What about a flower box under that window?

A window box won't look right because it will be too close to the ground. Also, window boxes are usually a country/ old-style look. It's not the style for your modern house. especially with your modern window style (which is very suitable for your house).

And window boxes are a big pain. They need constant watering which can easily stain the wall underneath, and plants need frequent replacements. Both the frequent watering and plant replacement are needed because a window box is long so it has to be fairly thin. Otherwise it would weigh too much. And that allows only a small amount of soil per plant, so the tiny root ball can't make any decent amount of leaf or flower growth. You just watch your plants get more and more scraggly, until you rip them out in frustration. I am an an enthusiastic gardener and have tried them several times with poor results.
