Impossible rug situation!

last year
last modified: last year

Im not in love with my wallpaper but trying to make it work….the rug is too dark and does not work. I am going in circles - what rug would tie this together?! Jute/white blend? Striped? Bordered? Pattern? Open to swap the art as well…i just want it to look cohesive and put together but this wallpaper is so limiting! I am scared to buy yet another item that will not work. Thank you for all the comments - I read and appreciate all of them. Added wallpaper close up picture. I did install it and now regret it.

I think a mauve or a dark olive rug would look good.

Your new chandelier and artwork look very nice in your dining room.

A striped rug should be a safe option but the tones in this one might be ok with the wallpaper but appear less so with the floor color.

If the rug is not returnable or if you don’t have another place for it, I think I could live with it.

Try no rug. Your floors are very nice and it’s easier to clean up a hardwood floor. Get protectors for chair legs to eliminate scratching.

I can’t even see the wallpaper without greatly enlarging your picture! So I don’t think it’s an issue at all. It’s a benign color in a benign pattern.

The white tabletop is unusual, to me anyway. I noticed it way before the wallpaper.

Find a plain rug in the same tone as your chandelier and chair.

Maybe a faux sisal in a blonde shade similar to chandelier and corner display piece. One of the on-line rug sites will help to visualize in your room.

I really do not like rugs under dining tables so no rug would work. I think if you do not love the wallpaper remove it not why you let it drive everything. The art works no dried or fake flowers and I am not inlove with rattan light fixtures so maybe a nice linear one there but to me the space is not bad really I also don't think those end chairs are really working with the other chairs and the table

Did you select/install the wallpaper? I agree with Patricia that if you aren't wild about it, then remove it and replace it with something you really do like.

However, I do like rugs in dining rooms, since they add some softness to a room that's full of hard surfaces. I think the room needs some color and pattern so I'd try a Persian-style hand-knotted rug in a colorway that you like. Then the rest of the decor can flow out of that.

I think there is a disconnect in the room in general. Hard to see the wallpaper’s detail, but it seems to be leaning more traditional and the lower wall treatment only makes it feel more so, while your furniture and accessories are at odds style wise. How to resolve without changing the walls is not easy, but think an eclectic feel could pull the room together. It’s important to see the big picture and don’t add anything until you know which way you want to head.

I’d start with painting below the wallpaper the same shade as paper. Add a colorful rug, which you then reference when accessorizing.

Consider moving the corner shelving (to where plant is) and add a console to ground that wall/balance mirror and it will be handy as both a surface when entertaining and for storage.

Down the road, consider rattan blinds, which will offset the traditional walls and tie in your pendant.

Good advice already - I’d be tempted to add some Ikea white linen panels on the windows to soften the room

It doesn’t look to me like you need a rug at all. Maybe remove and post a fresh picture without it.

Below are a few rugs we have used in our recent designs. We think a simple rug with a simple design, or a plain rug that is lighter will work for your dining room area. Please see the images included here:
