Any mulberry trees around?

Mulberries do have orange roots (often some near the surface). The leaves top of pic look like hickory, but root looks to originate from bottom of pic.

What's the plant in the background, with the tri-lobed leaves? The fine leaf serrations make me doubt it's Poison Ivy.

Picturethis says Pignut Hickory is the big plant. small plant is wild violets. Wondering if the roots are from osage orange

vettin, you're right, osage orange has orange roots too (related to mulberry). Is there an osage orange nearby?
