    Readers should know that on historic masonry restoration jobs, modern mortars like those found at the big box stores, are much too hard for ancient brick. Mortar is not adhesive; it is a bed. The bed must be softer than the brick, or the brick faces will self-destruct in freeze-thaw cycles.
