Fixing walls in Garage

Our garage walls and ceiling are a mess.

It is a two-car garage, one of which is pegboard, so I have two walls and the ceiling. Over the years, parts of the walls have become damaged and part of the drywall came down on the ceiling. My husband fixed it, but the plaster job he did is a mess.

We plan to put up MDF paneling which is 32" high and will cover most of the damage. I am trying to figure out what to do with the rest. I have read about textured paint, textured rollers, using a sponge with paint to create texture, all sorts of things. What I don't want to do is create an even bigger mess. Is there something I can easily do to make this look better. I know unless I put up new drywall, it won't be perfect. I just want it to look better.

I have attached a few pictures, but they are hard to see. One is of the texture currently on the walls, most of which is undamaged.

Thank you, Kevin and Cat. I have talked with my husband. We had no idea about the MDF and the impact wet cars have on the humidity in the garage. We are in an area where it rains and snows. I have someone I can call and will do that. It is probably correct that it may be cheaper for him to do the walls than to put up an MDF or something similar --- and it will be far less work for us. Let him fix the walls, we paint - done.

I still would like to put something on the walls about two feet high to protect the walls, but maybe just keeping some extra paint around to patch up dings would be easier.

Find a local drywall person and have them come in and fix the mess, in the ceiling. It shouldnt be very expensive, and It will be worth the money to have it done right.

Agree with @cat_ky Drywall is easily repaired - it’s DIY with a few proper tools and aquired techniques.

Imagining cost will be less professionally finished compared to applying MDF. Personally I wouldn’t texture the walls. Prime and paint with an inexpensive white paint thus future touch-ups will easily match. Note the pool noodle along the wall - that is used as a car door bumper,

Thank you for your replies.

It could be DIY, but we don't have the techniques.

My husband thinks he can do this - but I don't, especially the ceiling.

He is 80 years old!!

I had someone do interior drywall several years ago. I am going to call him.

I have not purchased MDF yet, but what I was looking at would be about $200.

It might be easier to have the drywall repaired and just paint --- and then keep the

paint around for touch-ups. Pool noodle is a great idea.

Putting MDF in the garage will be a disaster and even a bigger mess to deal with so don't even think about it. The humidity created from the outdoor elements and parking wet cars will make short work of the MDF, If you don't want to have the drywall fixed at least use OSB or plywood and paint it to hold up to the elements. Pretty MDF doesn't equate to durability.

I agree that his job wasnt the best, so I would definitely be calling the drywall person. Its also very hard working over your head, especially, when one is older. I also say no to the mdf. That isnt for a garage. I like the idea of a pool noodle too. I wouldnt have thought of that.
