What’s wrong with my Meteor?

last modified: 2 years ago

Ok the pictures are from today and we have been hot high nineties for the past couple of months. The problem is this has been going on since last year. It happened all last year and I worried I had over fertilized so this year I did not fertilize her at all and it has looked the same all year. It is in a bed with crazy love, lions rose, teasing Georgia, peach Melba and Vulcano all which are blooming great without any weirdness.

It has never produced a single bloom that looks like the picture from the English magazine I am posting.

What it is suposed to look like

what mine looks like all the time

perfect foliage and blooms a lot but always like this

vulcano today showing a perfect bloom at 96 degrees

I noticed a post from Moses before going to sleep last night and it is gone today. This plant has not been fertilized in a year and when I fertilize I only use osmocote slow releaze. I did fertilized roses near by so could the run off be enough to cause this?

Yes, Dianela, I went back and re-read your post and saw that I read it too fast the first time and did not cognate that you 'did not fertilize this year,' yet still experienced the unusual centers. So I deleted my post, and am trying to figure out what is happening to your Meteor's blooms, now. Please let me think some more, and after shopping for groceries, I'll give a careful opinion after I get back. Sorry for the puzzlement.

My Meteor had been a problem child since I planted it last year. Every bloom was proliferated. I moved it in to a pot to give it one more chance and even though mo more proliferation, blooms look just like yours. I think that I habe gotten one decent bloom. It is slow to repeat and and dissapointing when it does bloom. Its not just your plant

Interesting Kristine that you are having the same issue. It definitely seems it did not behave this way in England where it won the best floribunda award. Mine has been in constant bloom but not worth looking at. Do you have red acidic clay? I am wondering if my soil is the problem.

I love your jokes Ben :)

Sorry this rose is a dud for you so far Di!

Your plant looks fine to me. You're comparing your shrub to one small image in a magazine that was probably selected from hundreds of potential images. They chose the most perfect flower form and image, edited it and put in the mag. The rest of the bush that you cannot see probably looks just like yours.

Próspero maybe you are correct but if they chose a rose that looked like that as the floribunda of the year they are doing a poor job. These blooms are not alright. I have grown over 600 roses in the past 8 years and none of my plants have exhibited these kinds of blooms as the norm. We do get hot and the blooms shrinks and bleach but not this plant. It was like this in the 60s and 70s. I will give it another chance until next spring and document.

These blooms are not developing properly

BenT a crater really is what most of them look like. I will observe what they do this fall and update. I will keep it here for a while because I do not plan on placing anything here that i will have to leave behind when I move again. I guess it is posible our normal soil hydrogen levels are just too high for it.

The spot where Meteor was planted is now occupied by Buxom Beauty and it is doing great. Meteor is in a pot and the greenery Is healthy but the blooms are poor quality. I have to think that it is the rose

Different rootstocks, different blooms. Who knows?

Going to stop fertilizing everything in the entire surrounding area in case it is from fertilizer run off as pointed out by a friend. I will update if there is any improvement this fall or next spring. Prospero mine is in miltiflora maybe it will behave differently own root

You have way more patience than I do. With Kristine having the same problems...mine would be on the way out this fall if no improvements. But, sometimes it's a good thing to have patience. :) :)

Carol I am not very patient either. I am only being patient now because I should be moving by next spring and do not want to replace it with a rose I love I may have to leave behind. I am trying to keep all my new roses in pots so they can be easily moved.

Carol, I figure since mine is in a pot and looks very healthy it stays for now. One more year

I'm thinking that your Meteor is triggered to produce odd bloom centers. The rose has a gene for this. Since all Meteors are clones of the original Meteor, the faulty flower should appear on all Meteor bushes that are triggered by something that shows up under some specific, identical condition. It may be excess nitrogen in the soil as is the trigger for some rose varieties to produce vegetative centers/proliferations, or something entirely different. Over watering, toxins from neighboring trees/bushes, etc., and something like needing a harsher winter are just some possible triggers. The list could be arm's length.

    It's just an idea.

I got METEOR this yr, and it's only bloomed one flush.. I don't think it likes hot weather. Maybe with time it will get better. Or with cooler temps...

Dianela - that makes sense. :)

Kristine - sure, I've done that countless times. :) :)

Beth - 2/3 of the blooms are looking good. :)

Beth I have never gotten a bloom like ones on your 2nd and 3rd pictures. Yours has potential.

    Dianela,

Do you think Meteor has genes for dark brown stamens so that when its bloom goes to fully open and the stamens show, it looks abnormal being brown instead of the more normal yellow/gold color of most other varieties of roses.?

Did you ever see green lumpy, Brussels Sprouts like vegetative growths in the roses' centers? Try gently 'fishing,' around an open blooms stamens with your fingers for evidence of vegetative growth\proliferations.

Meteor may just have brown colored stamens normally.

Did you find any photos of Meteor by the sellers/rose houses that showed a fully open bloom with stamens showing? If they were yellow/golden in color, then I'm still stumped.

Moses I cant really find good pictures of this rose showing stemmens anywhere

    last modified: 2 years ago

Neither could I Dianela. I'll wager that tawny-brown stamens are normal for Meteor. The flower otherwise looks beautiful to me. If it grows well, has few disease issues, and the brown stamens you can get used to....perhaps it's a keeper.

Hmmmmm not good Kristine. That has real green on the inside and the bloom petals look undeveloped to me. I wonder what is its problem

And the foliage is green and vibrant. I gave had less than 5 good blooms. It may have to go.

I think i will just leave my behind when I move and not look back

Ok so the ugly brown stemens are not genetics. Here is the most normal bloom I have gotten this year.

No more fertilizer for this bed in case it is a fertilizer run off issue due to the incline

Now the foliage is turning brown. Goodbye Meteor

I’ve seen some horrible blooms on Meteor from the UK too, no idea how it won ’Rose of the Year’. I just tried another ‘new‘ release from Kordes, Spotlight. That gave me one or two decent yellow blooms in early Spring, but as soon as the temperatures began to even moderately climb, blooms instantly turned white and spotty - no staying power whatsoever! These two were bred in 2008 and 2010, maybe Kordes are getting desperate and recycling past duds?

Yes, I do t get it either, I thought maybe its first location wasnt ideal but Buxom Beauty is thriving there. I potted it up and the foliiage looked great until last week when the whole bottom half turned brown. I have too may other roses to try and Meteor is really bugging me now so adios

I love many of my Kordes but this one is juat not one of those. I agree Kristine it may be time for it to go. There are too many great roses out there.

I think that I will replace it eith ”The Orange Dude” Double Easy Orange

My 'Meteor' as well shows those awful centers, didn't get one single decent flower! 'Vulcano' on the other hand has been awesome in comparison! 'The Orange Dude', yes, what an awful name, but I'd snap up the rose in an instance, especially with 'Easy Does It' being one of the parents!
