Don't know the style nor colour scheme of your renovations but here are a few ideas...

There's a lot going on with the windows, so I think a very simple fixture that blends in would be best. I replaced several tracks with globe sconces. Not sure it would go with the style of your home.

How about some pics of the whole space with all the other lighting you have so we can actually help. . I for sure would not do the globe sconces that are totally dated lighting even worse than what you have . There are so many really interesting LED type lighting choices but I need to see the whole space . Post the new pics here in a comment DO NOT start another post .

Does the lighting have to be right there? Can you add a chandelier or bring a new light fixture further down.

So this lighting is to illuminate the staircase. Can the lighting not be placed above the stair case?

Maybe a light with multiple swing arm adjustable heads could work to provide some effective lighting in the space.

One thing to consider is the base of the new lights. Depending on how the current lights are put in the wall, you may be looking at doing to drywall patch work and painting if your base is smaller/not as wide. It might be helpful to take one of those lights down and see what the wall looks like behind it, and then you can determine what type of light/light base you need. It doesn't look like the easiest spot to get to, so maybe a professional?
