I've used a fitted sheet before to cover a box spring, though it was in a bed frame as well. Not sure if that helps, but at least it's an affordable option.

I have a Lands End matelasse bed cover and a matching matelasse box spring cover.

I did away with them in my Florida home. When we bought new beds I made sure get the lower boxspring.

Kculbers your bed is lovely but seems like a lot more work and maintenance. Prickly pear cactus idea is very innovative but again more work and effort. My dream is a big bed cover ( duvet,quilt) which I can place with matching pillows and have bed look elegant and finished. Preferably that would not need to be removed at night .
Any resources would be most welcome as I continue my quest.

You need a new bedframe. The basic metal frame you currently use is difficult to work with and really only looks presentable with a bedskirt.

I agree with you. I don't want my foundation showing and most of the ads for these quilts show the bedding hanging way over the sides and back - then when you get it you find it only has an 8-10 inch drop on either side.

This king size quilt is 92x106. With a mattress that is 80" long and 78" wide (King size) that only leaves you 12" at the bottom and 14 on either side. It isn't going to look like this.

I have a queen size bed and generally order king size comforters to get the drop needed to cover everything. I pull the bottom down far enough to cover and leave the pillows over just the sheets at the top of the bed. The extra 9" per side is usually enough to make it fit nicely. The above king size quilt would give me 23" on each side.

I do not need to order King size if I order a "bedspread". Always check the dimensions, but bedspreads should have around a 24" drop on each side.

This King sized bedspread from Touch Of Class is 124"x132" (compared to the above 92x106). With a mattress that is 80" long and 78" wide (King size) that leaves you 44" at the bottom and for pillow coverage and 27" on either side. It should look very similar to the picture

Amish handmade quilts are sometimes oversized and have a longer drop than commercial quilts or you can order one the size that you want.

With a king size bed you’re going to have a problem finding something that drapes long enough over the edges even though duvet covers come in different sizes you don’t want a cover that is much bigger than your inside duvet.

I solved this problem on a twin bed I have by purchasing a piece of fabric the length that I wanted and tacking it with upholstery tacks onto the boxspring. Covers the boxspring and bedframe if you want it to and does not need to hang down to the level of the floor like a bedskirt. You can make it whatever length you want. It’s not extremely removable but on the other hand how often do you really need to clean the covering on a boxspring.

You even felt my disappointment when the picture and the reality do not coincide. Get a different bed frame, preferably one where you can ditch the box spring. The basic metal frame is doing you no favors.

Alternatively, buy a platform and a low profile box spring. But the no box spring route is the cleanest IMO.

To answer your question about the different bed coverings:

A duvet is a plain white comforter that fits inside a duvet cover.

A comforter can be used alone or in a duvet cover. Comforters that you use alone generally have designs on them. Comforters usually have thicker, fluffier filling.

A quilt is a covering that is quilted. Typically they have thin filling.

Following with interest. I ordered some king quilts on line a while back - for queen beds - and they STILL had the high-water-pants look. I returned them. This post has rejuvenated my search.

Cal King with king duvet. Platform bed with low profile box spring. Wouldn't really want it lower.

Anj_p - a very elegant solution. Problem, i may be a tad older and have difficulty with a bed that is very low - or very high. Have to stick with the “older school” look. Thanks for the pictures.

@Lyla you can get a bed in any height. Yes, mine is lower to the ground (chair height, if you think that's low) but if the legs were taller I would still feel similarly about the length of the comforter.

I just ordered a platform bed for our guest room (no box spring required) from amazon and the bottom was 18" off the ground. I ended up returning it because it was too high for me, and that was just mattress + bed frame.

My point was to show that it's your actual bed set up with your box spring & frame that's making this challenging for you, and there's a solution that doesn't involve having to find a bigger comforter.

I don’t know how you launder your bedcovers, but I found I couldn’t fit my king comforter in my washer, so for some years I took it to a commercial laundry aimed at such items. Seemed expensive. The comfy was for cool/ cold weather and I used lighter cotton quilts in summer, and I can wash those.

My Pottery Barn king bed has side boards so at least I don’t have to get cover too far down, but still over mattress and a bit of box spring. Many king comforters just barely do that.

I like the idea of the box spring cover- especially if the fabric can be a nicer, more bedding -type look than the things that are just meant as dust covers, & look like mattress pad material. There is a concept of using just the duvet cover alone, like a double sheet, if you find one in a great pattern ( or solid) that works with your decor, and then put the quilt or comforter over that.

Also, if a cover has to come quite far over sides to work, I’ve found that then the end corners may be TOO long, dragging on the floor and looking very bunchy.

Otherwise, yes, measure measure measure. So sometimes I find a fabric, pattern/ color that I love, but can’t get the size that really covers.

We have found oversized bedspreads on Bryland.com and we are very happy with them.

In the past I bought two identical duvet covers or quilts and would put one over the boxspring, the mattress on top and then the other cover on top of the mattress. Sometimes I left them loose and other times I pinned them under the boxspring for different looks. I would only wash the box spring cover when I flipped my mattress twice a year.

Even simpler, just get a bottom sheet edged in elastic ( for the life of me I can’t think of their proper name -if there is one!)Then put your extra large cover over to drape down, your base will be covered.

Never had a bed that looked put together. There's always the issue with the bedding not covering the boxspring. I did get the low profile boxspring but then my mattress is super thick so that was just kind of a wash. I thought about using king size bedding on my queen to get the extra length as suggested. Currently using a Q size duvet cover with NO insert/comforter, due to hot flashes at night. YAY me!!

Ahh yes - fitted sheet. Do you think I could think of that a couple of days ago?
