Bearberry is a creeping manzanita that's probably native to you. I'm now in zone 6 and my bearberry suffers some winters, but one in a park in town is thriving. I like creeping or moss phlox. It's pretty close to evergreen (harsh, cold winter winds can make it less than lush green, but if it's covered with snow, it's protected. It flowers in spring. It comes in colors from white to purple and all shades of pink. When it blooms, it's covered with flowers. For more impact, you can plant bulbs in it. I sometimes struggle with many bulbs, but the critters don't munch on daffodil bulbs. You can get them in white, to go with the phlox.

Expirated? What does that mean in this context? I can tell you that my bearberry at my old place in WV was some 12 ft in diameter.

I am sure Henry meant to write extirpated (a local extinction). It is coming along very nicely, lovely property.

He meant extirpate which means to root out and destroy comelpetely. The species existed there at one time but has been extirpated.

lol those aren’t weeds. Those are annuals and other perennials I planted

I would recommend you repeat some plants rather than introducing further types. The effect of lots of different plants can be incoherent and spotty. Lavender is a lovely thing but it attracts bees so your mail person might not be thrilled.

Yes, but the mailbox is literally right next to the street and there have been no problems this summer with bees stinging the mail person. Also, we had to get rid of a tiny developing wasps nest in the mailbox this year. So I’m sure a few bees won’t bother the mail person

HERE is a link to my state's biodiversity project. 4 years ago someone found a lonely plant growing in reindeer moss in Allegany County. This is highly state rare in Maryland. I have yet to see a sucessful planting of BB in any form/cultivar in my state in a cultivated planting, they just don't like it here.

I’m guessing the climate warmed a bit too much for uva-ursi to enjoy it here. My guess would be that since their habitat were beaches on Lake Erie, I’m guessing that it just got a little too hot for them
