Selecting Stone for Bathroom Addition

Hi, we are adding a master bath addition to our home.

The first picture is our inspiration as far as how the bath and shower layout will look. We really like the tub deck flowing into the shower bench. However, the front face of the tub will just be wood either bare or painted undecided at this point.

We have picked out the tile that will be both the shower walls and the floor in the bathroom.

Pictures of the tiles (which are 24 x 48) arepictures 2 and 3. Were in love with them and very happy with this choice BUT they cannot be laid until we pick the bathtub deck/shower bench..

We are struggling to decide what the bathtub deck/shower bench should be!

The fear is it being too busy with another "marble" look.. but is a safe neutral Quartz too boring?

ANY opinions are welcome and so very appreciated!!

Random thoughts:

- That's a lovely inspiration picture, but I'd consider larger-scale tile for the shower walls (to make cleaning easier).

- That's also a lot of glass to keep clean. Note that the owners of this inspiration picture popped for the more expensive sapphire glass, which has no green tint.

- I don't see a storage niche in the shower, though it might be hidden in the right-side corner, which we can't see. Anyway, that's something I'd want to add. Allow for double the storage you think you'll need; you won't be sorry. And try to place your storage in a hidden spot, as the addition of a big purple shampoo bottle would add nothing to your inspiration picture.

- What's wrong with that inspiration picture: No place to hang towels so that they're easy to reach from the shower door -- don't let your real bathroom be the same!

- Be sure you can reach into the shower and turn on the water without committing your body to the initial cold spray.

- I also like the concept of the tub deck flowing into the shower bench, but the seat will cut into your shower space -- be sure to measure your actual floor space, not the overall shower space.

- I also like the tub-in-deck concept. It's certainly easier to clean than a (lovely) clawfoot, and it gives you a spot to set your drink or book.

- What material should the bench be? I'd say keep it in the same tan-brown used on the front of the tub and the side of the bench. Words that describe this picture: Calm, serene, simple ... do not bring in more finishes, which would introduce the words choppy, interrupted, excessive.

- On the same topic, I'd want the tub's front face to match whatever you're using for the shower bench side. One thing that "works" here is the streamlining of materials. Don't chop it up with too many materials.

- Is that the vanity you're using? It doesn't seem to match the other materials you're considering -- it looks rather plastic and cheap compared to your other choices. I'd rather have one good-sized, functional sink in the middle (with wall-mounted faucet for ease of cleaning) and a bank of drawers at the vanity for each spouse.

- That's some strong veining. Too much veining.

- Other names for "safe, neutral Quartz" include "That which stands the test of time". "Easy to clean". "Affordable".

@mrs Pete thank you for all of the time you took to write that. Your points are definitely helpful. Sorry if I was confusing in explaining our goal. I tend to do that! The second pictures are the tile that we are committed to. They will be large 24x48 rectangles on the shower walls and bathroom floor. The bathtub deck stone is my biggest question here but you really helped. I think we will revisit Quartz and look for something pretty simple (maybe white) so that it doesn’t get too busy. These are very large tiles -- is the shower proportionally large?

I think we will revisit Quartz and look for something pretty simple (maybe white) so that it doesn’t get too busy.

Simple is good for tile /other things that cannot easily be changed. Matching tiles isn't as easy as it looks, and keeping it simple is best for us non-pros.

Paint, linens, artwork, etc. can bring in personality.

What is the VANITY counter top? A bench top, and a deck on the tub....can be the same SOLID surface. A bench top should always be a solid surface, grout is not waterproof.

If you are a purist? The simple choice is very non competitive Thassos marble, which is pure white.. Counter top, deck and bench top. Floor of the niche in shower if you plan that. Failing that? A plain white quartz.

Are you doing more traditional details than your inspo suggests? "Bare wood" ( no , you mean natural, clear coat ) and if painted..would assume you mean white.

You will need to be VERY clear as to how you transition this, as the face of that bench? I can not be wood or painted anything : ) Please IGNORE the materials here in pic below, but I think your result will be better minus a wood or painted clad to the tub front. Make all else as traditional as you like: )

@Jan We are certainly learning a lot along the way here! I will look up Thassos marble, thank you for that! The shower floor will be geometric matching the tile that we are using. And, by bare I did mean clear of course or painted white/cream color. So much to consider! At this point, we are $20,000 over budget due to foundation issues and things we have stumbled across along the way so for a vanity we are going to wait until more funds are available to decide that😅 I thank you so much for taking the time to help with your response we really appreciate it. I will be sure to update with pictures along the way.

Remodel is full of surprises, You should show the entire plan, not just the materials. The layout. Dimensions, A picture of the existing.

I do understand resources, but the single biggest issue with piecemeal on a bath or a kitchen? Is a shoulda woulda coulda.: )

You may need to plan quartz..... Thassos is kaching $$$

Refine the look to easier. I'd forget the panel use a quartz front. different tile, same idea. Even if the shower has no curb. Don't get me started on that, I like a curb - I like a DRY floor too: )
