Hey there is no standard for placing shelves besides TV. But if you have younger kids or pets you can place the lower shelf a little higher. I think the distance between the shelves should be same. 3 shelves would look great instead of 2 but it might depend on the height of the ceiling.

What are you doing the shelves for? I mean unless you jave things that need display IMO a shelves filled with stuff are never nice. Is thta ceiling sloped so lower next to the FP could be an optical illusian . Take a pic from further back showing the whole wall from floor to ceiling Post here in a comment.

I think shelves might look awkward by the amount of visual impact the middle section consumes and once installed/if you dislike, it means repairing and painting wall.

Proportions/weight/balance are so important and comparing the size of the couches to the wall feature makes it hard to judge. Can you take a picture from further back and advise the wall height to the slant. If height allowed, I’d do something like below and paint the entire wall the same color.

Thank you for all the comments. I've attached photos of the entire room... It's a wide narrow room. Ceilings are only 8ft to the start of the slope. The TV wall is a true black, looks gray in the previous photo because I took it at night with lights on.

My thought was wood shelves on either side to display some small plants, photos, etc. I've gone back and forth with what to do with the empty wall space.

If not shelving, what other ideas would you suggest?

Great job on the TV wall. It is really impactful, and is going to dwarf any shelves you place there. I don't think you need to put anything on the wall. The TV dominates and is enough.

I would consider getting a much larger floor plant, a tall fig or palm that helps take some of the attention away from the TV and soften the edges. If you want more than one plant, cluster them together to the left of the TV. Asymmetry is going to look better here than flanking both sides.

I'm also curious how it will look placing one of the sofas where the arm chairs are and the arm chairs on the side where the sofa was. I think having the black wall and black chairs across from each other really makes the sofas on the side feel like they are an after thought. With the sofas as an L, it will make the set up feel more cohesive.

Given that section’s proportions/height and prominence, this is a tough wall especially given the slant and being in a living area (vs a basement.). Could try large, graphic art, but couches should be moved away from wall/consider a new layout.

You could add horizontal slats in the same width as the middle section and stain to match your flooring. Couches could remain as is.

Agree with @Kendrah - I wouldn’t add a bunch of small items to that wall, think larger and simpler (takes a lot of discipline to not continue adding) - agree that asymmetry is your friend in this room

I would simply place taller plants instead of shelves with small items, perhaps a grouping. You can place them in containers on legs to make them taller. And a gallery wall on the othe side with family pictures or other...

Now IMO even less reason for shelving art or the plants if real would be a much nicer choice

You could do shelves, but we think a tall plant and maybe some artwork might work better.
