You don’t want it to be too dark. The Light Reflective Value of a paint tells you (obvs) how much light it reflects. Black has an LRV of 0, White has an LRV of 100.

The LRV of Hale Navy is 8.36. It is one of the darkest blues out there. It is a beautiful color, but it’s definitely dark.

Blue Note is described as a black with blue undertones, and it has an LRV of 9.02. Dark, but still lighter than Hale Navy. West Coast has an LRV of 24.33 - much lighter.

I wonder whether in darkness you are searching for a richer color. I wonder whether you might prefer something like SW Deep Sea Dive (LRV of 10).

Hm yea i dont want it to look black but was thinking the navy would break up the neutral look and provide some contrast? should i do a lighter navy?

My best advice is to narrow it down to three or four shades, buy some samples, take them home, and paint some boards. Lean them up against a big cardboard box that will sit where the island will sit, and look at the colors throughout the day into the evening. You have such beautiful light in that space. The color you choose should be wonderful in it. Here are some Benjamin Moore options that might work.

But you may be a person who likes dark blues, and there’s nothing wrong with that. If you don’t want it to be mistaken for black, look for a deep teal. Honestly, this one might be my favorite.

eam44 thats a great idea! i have soo many giant boxes from moving so can use that. will try a few diff shades to see what works

Yeah, I like midnight blue too but I'd definitely want to get a sample before committing. If you scroll down the (linked) midnight blue webpage to the Similar Colors section, I also like the two left-hand colors, Shasta Lake and Superior Blue, under Lighter Colors (all based on their appearance on a computer monitor).

So tough. photos online all make the paint colors look lighter in the ktchen. i just did some benjamin moore samples and they look dark on the poster board. i painted 2 of my fsvorites on an old wood frame and look lighter. what do you think of the attached sample? it is benjamin moore blue note which seemed to be a similar color to midnight blue.

I think, its too dark. You are trying to use a color that is darker than what will look good with the rest of the kitchen. There are some nice suggestions up above. I like the one called Fiiji and also Summer nights. They would both give a brighter look to your kitchen.

Im having a hard time finding a good navy that is not too dark. i dont want a teal color. will have to try out the behr midnight blue sample as the similar one i got from benjamin moore was too gray.

Should i justdo this color ? was in listing of items where im purchasing the island.

Here's Behr's Arrowhead Lakewhich appears similar in brightness to the color above but has more gray like Midnight Blue. I guess I just like a blue-gray rather than a blue. But if the paint color above was a factory finish and another color was 3rd-party, I'd choose the factory finish.
