Guest Bathroom Refresh

We are getting ready to refresh our main floor bathroom. The 18 inch floor tile remain, as it matches what we have for the rest of the downstairs. Want to replace the bath tub tile and possibly the countertop as it has a chip.

Our updated upstairs bathrooms have 12 x 24 tile on the floor and walls however needs suggestions for tile color and size for the tub area (can we use 12 x 24 with the existing 18 inch tile?) - the floor is very busy so I’m thinking it will need to be something much more muted. I will be replacing the fixtures and mirrors, etc. but the towel racks, etc. remain as they are nice quality and still in good shape. Do I need to replace both the floor and wall tile so they match, or can I just do the walls without it looking like I was too cheap to replace the floors? Thank you in advance for yo!!

I think you should be able to find a wall tile that coordinates with the existing floor. The surround and the floor barely touch each other, and only outside the wet zone, really. If you are keeping the bathtub redoing only the walls should not be a problem. (If it were a shower with a tile floor it would be much more of a problem to try and save it).

I would do it all if possble. Very difficult to match up old tile.

eld6161, will it look wonky with the bathroom having a different tile when all of the adjacent rooms have another tile ?

I would just get a nicer shower curtain. The rest is fine for now. Bathrooms can have different flooring than adjacent rooms, the door is usually closed and it needs to be able to handle a mess.

We have plumbing issues so the surround needs to go. No choice sadly :(

Ah, I wondered what the problem was with this relatively neutral tile. I agree that it should be possible to come up with a nice taupe or tan that would coordinate, or stick with a white but maybe in a matte finish. Any solid color can work -- bring home some samples to meet your floor.

Sometimes a chip can be sanded out of a counter in an inoccuous way, if you would keep it otherwise,. The room as a whole seems very nice.

If you have a plumbing problem then it makes sense to pay for the new waterproofing that will have to go in behind the new wall tile (can’t just swap out tile without dealing with the waterproofing) do you have an extra floor tile laying around? the best approach would be to take it to a local tile store and have them help you - colors are tough on phones/monitors

IMO since you have to rip out that whole surround anywhay why let the floor drive the choices just do it all now and I like glass shower screens over shower curtains it is a nice clean look .

I would do a nice coordinating wall tile to the ceiling, keep the tub if it is in good shape and go to your local granite yard and see about getting a remnant to replace the top - on my monitor, that is the one thing that seems too "yellow" for the space. I think I would lighten the paint color slightly so it feels a bit brighter.

Otherwise , it is a good space!

Find a shower curtain you love that works with the floor, then find a tile for the surround. There are a thousand shades of white/cream, but not a ton of shower curtains.

Thanks for all of the feedback! I actually do have a new shower curtain that I do like :) i have decided to replace the vanity top to something more neutral (with whites/cream/greys that will work with the flooring). Once i've got a final decision on that, I'll look to tile again.
