Even if you remove the shelves, you'll still have an off-center niche. I would fill the shelves with books and mags and make a reading nook there.

Place a side table and art on the other side.

For the fireplace, you have a nice floor-to-ceiling bumpout that would be perfect to paint a dark accent color. Any dark color will make the TV and stove recede visually.

I do see a patch of green/gray paint in your photo. I would repaint the gray and the burgundy to one neutral color and let the fireplace be the accent color.

Oops...The whole house is painted that gray? Would you be able to repaint just the living room? If not just ignore the green... a lot of people get that thru the window glass they use now. Or trees outside, etc. Easier to continue the color from the rest of the house and match your gray for the burgundy wall.

You could try the light cream or palest gray from the floor, but paint the baseboards the same or similar color...the white makes the floors look dull.

Flat for walls, semi-gloss for trim.

Get some stove spray paint and paint out the shiny metal.

Remove the upper two shelves and use one to add another shelf below the lower two.

Ok, thanks! Would it be best to paint that shiny metal the dark gray color as the fireplace or black? I plan on painting or staining the wood mantle black. As for the shelves on the left side, there's 2 outlets on the bottom wall so I would not be able to add a shelf at the bottom. I would like to completely remove that shelving and place something else instead. Something that would provide symmetry on each side of the fireplace like a black bookshelf. If I do that, how high should the bookshelf be? I appreciate you helping me!

But the fireplace itself (the stove and bumpout) is off-center in the room. A unit on each side can't change that. You would have to paint the whole wall an accent color to downplay the fireplace. The previous owner did that with the burgundy. See how it blends in? If you remove the shelves and choose a dark color like Navy, it would enhance the desired effect even more.
