Samsung washing machine - no surprise

We bought a house with a Samsung W/D - previous owners bought new in 2021. Today my lovely appliance repair man told me the bearings are shot and it's not worth repairing. I would never choose to buy Samsung but I seem to have purchased two homes where previous owners bought new Samsung laundry equipment. My first thought was to buy a new set of a different brand but appliance repairman of 24 years says they're all about the same in terms of longevity except for Speed Queen. Not going to spend that much so I thought LG - seems to get more good reports than some. However, I thought I'd see if I could just buy another Samsung washing machine in the unique Champagne color and what the cost of that would be. Labor Day sale - $698 - decided to give it a go, save some money and see if it lasts longer than three years. My expectations are low.

And in three more years? Get the Speed Queen. When I bought SQ almost years ago (no troubles whatsoever), I had heard they would be expensive, but when I went into the locally owned appliance story, the W and D were well below list price.

A new machine with set-in-mind low expectations re: previous experience with the brand gives you an opportunity to consciensciously employ good usage routines from the get-go for comparison of longevity. Avoid cold washes, use a sufficient dose of detergent (don't skimp!) to insure the wash water is properly conditioned to flush soils away, chlorine bleach regularly, and leave the door ajar at all times when the machine isn't running.

One thought that crossed my mind is that lack of proper care and maintenance by the previous owner may have impacted the lifespan of the washing machine. From everything I've seen, they were very lame about maintenance and caring for things in the home. They seemed to be all about appearances and nothing about function. You would not believe the mold in the detergent tray or the lint in the dryer duct. I addressed those first thing. I also have a nine year old Samsung W/D in a different home that work fine. Granted it's a second home so it's seen more limited use.

In any case I'm cool with spending $700 to solve this problem. I also have to solve a refrigerator problem - related to its position next to an angled pantry wall - that I've decided warrants a Subzero. So any $ I might have spent on Speed Queen would go toward the fridge.

You've had bad luck with Samsung appliances. LG is generally considered a reliable brand. If you're looking for a more affordable option, consider LG. However, if you're willing to take a risk, buying another Samsung on sale might be worth it, especially if it has a good warranty.

I now have the new, essentially the same Samsung washer. Fits on the pedestal, matches the dryer and works for now. It’s a practical, relatively inexpensive solution rather than buying a new pair. Love my Samsung TVs but would never buy Samsung appliances other than in this situation.
