After I plant my zinnias in the ground in the Spring, I sprinkle them lightly daily until they emerge, which should take about a week. This Florida, followed by a car trip thing, is beyond my experience. I just sow them and sprinkle them. You can click on the photo to see a larger version and then close that by clicking on the "X" in the upper right-hand corner. Yes, sprinkling also brings up weeds.

Zen_Man I did sprinkle them daily trying to keep them moist, but it took forever (more than two weeks) for the 3 to come up and the rest never made it.... I came home from the post office one day and found a flock of doves out there so I thought they might of ate the rest of them.

Save yourself time and bother and just purchase started plants when you return from Florida. No having to endure a lengthy trip in the car, no worries with powdery mildew and the plants will be large enough to withstand the birds :-)

They get expensive when you want to plant them in masses. I brought 50 geraniums that I grew from seed. At the store they were 7.95 each for small ones and much more for larger ones. I wanted to plant the same amount of zinnias. I did four packet of seeds because I wanted a lot of them... I think that it cost prohibitive to buy started plants

Agreed. Zinnias are reasonably affordable from seeds.
