You are correct, having such a visible roof means you do have to choose wisely. If you are looking at asphalt shingles specifically, I had good results from the approach I took which was to get samples and look closely at the various colors of the granules and picked out a few that most closely matched the color scheme of my house, which was a seafoam green, white, and a greige concrete block color. The shingle was called weathered wood, and it was mostly varioius grey browns but it also had granules of that same minty green-blues in there. By looking at the samples next to the house at all hours of the day and various weather conditions, it soon became clear which was the right choice and it was! Got so many compliments on it (I too have a steep very visible roof). Seems like all the shingle co's had their own version of weathered wood or cedar shake (made to resemble new wood shake before it turns gray) but one co's weathered wood wont be the same as another co's..
