Sure it’s not the property line or marking a jog in the property line (concrete posts are typical for marking property lines where I am but they are buried) Seems like an odd spot for a street sign. Any marks where something might have attached to it? Do any more exist in the vicinity or just this one?

My best guess would also be a property marker.

If it's not on the property boundary, it's unlikely to be a boundary marker. Was your house ever a business, like an inn? It's also possible it once held a mailbox. My father over-engineered everything, so a sandbox he built for us as kids in the middle of the back yard of a house we sold in 1966 is still there, as a flowerbed. Thanks to Google, I know this. So, it's possible it was an over-engineered post for a sign or a mailbox. If you don't need it for a mailbox, I'd put a pretty birdhouse on top.

Is the house on a corner lot? If so, it is probably the remains of an old street sign.
