Mallomars!

I saw a display of Mallomars at the local indie grocer's today. I don't think I've seen them for what? 30+ years. Oh, yum! Jim says he doesn't like marshmallows, so I told him, I'd eat his. He said he'd suffer and eat his anyway. Absolutely delicious!

I'm pretty sure this West coaster has never had one - I'm not sure I've even seen one. I'm not a huge marshmallow fan and think I could probably count on one hand the number of times I've made and eaten a s'more, but I'll take your word for it that these are good and important to you.

I've never had one either but have had similar type cookies. Had to google them and they're called pinwheels.

Saw them in northern NJ this week, and my niece got them in NC.

They’re typically only available in stores during the cooler months, although it‘s not really very cool here yet!

Mallomars are nothing like they used to be. Actually most Nabisco products are pretty awful now. But I recently bought a pack of Safeway's Signature version. They are pretty close to what I remember Mallomars tasting like in the past, although they look a bit lumpy.

I've never really cared for them ( but I will eat them of course!).

They have been part of a sort of ritual around here, ( NY, NJ and now I see near me in PA) announcing that summer is over.

They are only available in the fall ( or late summer) and I think by late winter are no longer found.

The supermarkets around here always have a big display and sale when they first come in for the season. My BIL is a fan and we always would get him a few boxes.

editing to add, I just looked at the linked article. I was actually thinking of Shoprtie which it mentioned, doing the big ads and displays but they are available at most supermarkets in this region.

I've never had a Mallomars. Not sure I've seen them around, present or past. Are they similar in taste to Nabisco's Pinwheels?

I see them but have never bought them. As a child I loved a questionably named version in Germany. Wonder how similar they are.

I just bought 3 boxes of them last week and enjoy at least one or two daily. Yummy!

It's been a LONG time since I've had a Mallomars, but I remember I liked them-and if I remember correctly, the marshmallow was creamy and dense inside-and oozed out? Yum! Is that right? I've never liked pinwheels because the marshmallow is not creamy.

Update: The marshmallow bar I am thinking about is Valomilk Candy Cups-not Mallomars. Never had a Mallomars which looks like Pinwheel cookies to me, which I have had and do not like.

I remember eating something like it, but not that brand. Do Mallowmars have a bit of red jelly between the marshmallow and cookie? Whatever I ate did.

The Canadian version of Mallowmars is Whippets by Dare, which come with a version that has a raspberry layer. You can buy them on the US east coast at Ocean State Job Lot stores. I think Amazon carries them. Omg, they are my favorite cookie ever and I have to run away if I see them in stock. From what I read people who loved the old Mallowmars should try Whippets.

I am familiar with the name Mallomar but I don’t remember ever eating one. I had to look up a Pinwheel, those are not at all familiar to me.

As a kid, I liked Hostess Snowballs.

Mallomars use real chocolate instead of coating chocolate, so the are really fragile for shipping in hot weather. And melt on your fingers, too.

I recall one season of British Making Show that had a version as the technical challenge. There was a particular British name for them, something like tea biscuit. Anyone remember that.

My British born father called them Spongey Bottoms. Now I realise that probably was his own made up word. 😄 He probably opened the package upside down. Who knows.

I still call them Spongey Bottoms.

"was a particular British name for them, something like tea biscuit."

Teacake. As in Tunnocks teacakes. I've never had one and don't ever want to.

I had to Google Mallomars. Seems to be similar.

Not to be confused with the kind of teacake which we toast. That's not sickly confectionary but a yeast bread type bun which is halved, toasted and buttered.

IIRC Pinwheels have a chocolate cookie base and Mallomars have a golden cookie base. I think Pinwheels are larger too. My dad liked Pinwheels and my mom would get them on a rare occasion. That is how I tried them but nor Mallomars. I think both have been changed by the cost of chocolate and the rules regarding hydrogenated fats. I feel like it's the chocolate coating that is different and not in a good way. Well, don't need them -- but having one like I remember would not be al bad either.

I've never had nor seen Mallomars. I think I've only come across it in nostalgia-focused essays and online discussions. As I do not care for marshmallow, I doubt I'd enjoy Mallomars.

I often get the Dare's "Whippet" cookies.

The "Original" and "Raspberry" are 15, at 250 grams - but the "Black Forest" (apple and cherry) and "Maple", which I prefer, are 285 grams (454 of which make a pound), usually priced about $2.49.

I love Pinwheel cookies. They used to be a lot bigger than today's cookie. When I was working, I'd reward myself on payday by buying a pack of them. Mmmmmm. I want some now.

Wow, twice in two days, the topic of Mallomars has come up. Maybe the universe is trying to tell me something?. My dad used to love them. I wonder if he still would? I'll be visiting them in a couple of weeks, maybe I'll bring some with me.

    Thanks for

So I kind of want to get Pinwheels, Mallomars and Whippets and see if any live up to the ideas. In the interest of science, of course. Gotta admit that the raspberry would be a winner for me if the chocolate is decent.

Mallomars remind me of my Nana and and my childhood. They always have them at Publix and I have tried a few times but they are not the same. They seem hard and the chocolate seems thick. That Canadian version looks tasty. And that cherry thing as well. I have never seen that one in NY or FL. They both look yummy.

Pinwheels and Mallomars are not available at HEB but might be at Kroger and Walmart (regional vs national distribution?). Other than Amazon, I found Kitch'n in Easton, PA had Whippets in original, raspberry and coconut. But it's nearly 100 degrees here under this high pressure dome we've got going now, so not ordering anything with chocolate for a while.

    @lascatx

I never heard of Kitch’n, and Easton, Pa is 10 miles from me, so I googled. All the reviews are terrible and they only have a 1 star rating. You probably would have researched them before ordering, but I thought I’d mention it.

I always got a kick out of the frenzy , the buzz, that mallomars are back in season. I never loved them ..but those others with the raspberry look interesting. I guess fundamentally I'm not a marshmallow lover

Thanks hhireno. I do try to research before I buy. I may ask DS to bring whippets if he sees them in Canada later in the fall, but I think my discussion is more nostalgia than real desire. It's a fun idea to compare them all, and if they were still made with a coating that actually tastes like chocolate, I might do it just for fun. But I remember the last time I saw Pinwheels and made that nostalgia purchase -- I threw all but one or two away and they cost even more now. It would become an expensive disappointment in all reality. On the other hand, I've actually been thinking about what it would take to make something like these. If I get serious about wanting something that tastes good, that may be the route I take.

Interesting - this came up in an image search, because I wanted to be sure I was thinking of the correct product.

From 2013 - their centennial anniversary:

    https://www.thrillist.com/eat/nation/10-things-you-didnt-know-about-mallomars

Turns out I was thinking of Moon Pies. I remember buying those for a snack - along with strawberry Nehis - when I was a kid. I think the chocolate ones are pretty similar, just bigger.

I often buy Dare-made Whippet cookies, the choice in my usual store is Original, 250 gram box, with no fruit, just cookie, marshmallow and chocolate, with more rounded top than the ones foas showed, or Maple, which I prefer, 285 grams per box, same price.

I also buy Dare-made Viva Puffs, an almost identical cookie, 250 gram boxes, same price, for the fruit flavours.

MIL, who grew up in NYC, loves Mallomars but I guess they are hard to find where she has lived for the last 60 years (San francisco). We can get them at our local grocery store here in MD so DH brings them when he goes out to CA to visit her. He will occasionally buy a box for himself. I remember eating them as a kid but if I'm going to eat a storebought cookie, I would rather a regular Oreo!

Carolb. Moon Pies are similar, but also very different. Moon Pies are larger and flatter with a thinner layer of marshmallow between two cookie layers, so it's more cookie with some marshmallow. The others are more marshmallow on a cookie base -- no cookie top. I tried a couple as a kid, but they were never a big thing in our house.

    sushipup2 thanked lascatx

Oh I understand that difference in proportions and arrangement, I was just thinking: cookie/marshmallow/chocolate coating = similar.

Anything 'marshmallow' ranks right down there with cotton candy for me.

I'd guess the calendar (weather and school) has always been a factor in when these are featured, but I wonder if the company has failed to factor in climate change.

There's an extra charge for dry ice when I've ordered candy shipped to the Midwest outside of late-fall/early spring.

Love Mallomars, unfortunately only had them when visiting back East. Every once in a while I will visit a specific grocery to pick up a couple of things that no one else carries, including a box of Mini Moon Pies. This satisfies my marshmallow with chocolate craving. Funny, I do not like marshmallows on their own but love them with chocolate.

I never cared for Mallomars as a child. When we were in Scotland this summer we had Tunnock’s tea cakes, essentially the same thing but with very soft marshmallow i stead of the chewier stuff I’d had as a child. They were delicious, and came individually wrapped in foil in either (real) dark or milk chocolate…. yummy!
