Got a few things transplanted before the rain sets in

Finally - rain! Figured it would be a good time to transplant some things so the rain could settle it all in. I removed a large butterfly blush and moved a rugosa rose to take it's place. I have two other large BB's in this area, so I'm not BB-less by any means. It was just getting too crowded and the wayward sprawly branches of the BB was shading out too many things, the rugosa is about 5' so about as tall as the BB but a neater plant habit. I had some monkshood that cr*pped out on me so I moved some culver's root that was in an awkward spot, culver's root is a hard to place plant so I don't know if I'll like it there, but figured why not try, it can't look any more awkward than it did where it was. That move was harder, I had maple tree roots to contend with, although not too bad since I did bed prep a few years ago. Also got one of two potted Geranium magnificum planted, I dug them when I re-arranged another area and couldn't bear to toss them. I have a spot for the other one earmarked already but didn't get it done today, that can wait a bit.

It started to sprinkle just as I was finishing up and watering things in. Looked at the radar and the rain should move in about another hour or so -- woohoo! It is much needed and a blessing. I did water some of my younger trees in prep for what I hope is a good soaker, wanted to soften up the ground a bit so the rain can sink in better -- priming the area, I guess you could say.

We had rain last night, too! Glorious. I have three new shrubs to plant which I will do in the morning-an American cranberry, an Ilex verticillata, and a Viburnum nudum. We are expected to get some rain on Tuesday and Thursday, too. I will need to take some aspirin first though. My 'good' knee is not feeling so good right now. Sigh.

That's pretty dynamic mxk3 and Cyn. I was feeling quite pleased to have got a handful of small perennials in the ground but nothing which required digging out and moving. Rain here too...and most of the coming week, I think, so will try to make some headway with transplanting...although I am very vague about where to actually place things, so have tended to put things in the existing beds as starting from a totally empty space is kinda terrifying.

I have a bunch of geraniums to plant...but I have to dig them out of existing beds. Salvias Nachtvlinder and Phyllis Fancy are looking really good, as are the alstroes and scarlet penstemons...but at some point soon, I am just going to have to bite the bullet and dig out the geraniums, figworts, geums and daphne.. I do have the makings of a red and purple bed so if I can get one of the new allotment beds edged and ready, I could think about getting the spade out.

it is much needed and a blessing.

As I have mentioned in other threads our location has had the most rain in years, all season long ie every month from April to August but you are only as good as your last rain and we have had almost none this month. It was just yesterday that I used up all of our rain barrel supply and I wake up this morning with rain coming down :).
