You can purchase 2" marble hexagons for less money - some types of marble for much less.

HOWEVER, the quality of the marble will be different + the hexagons may not be consistently sized or attached to the mosaic sheet with consistent spaces between the individual hexagons (so that your grout lines will be consistent).

Where is the place of origin of the Dolomite marble used to make the mosaic sheets? Dolomite mined from the northern Italy is of high quality, for example.

I used mixed marble 2" mosaic sheets for my shower pan - it has Thassos/Bardiglio/Carrara - all high quality. The sizing was pretty consistent + there weren't fissures in any of the pieces. The Thassos is actually Thassos from Greece. The Carrara was real Carrara = mined in Italy. The Bardiglio was mined in Tuscany, Italy. Many lower price retailers will substitute marble mined in China instead of genuine Thassos/Bardiglio/Carrara. This seems to happen most often with Carrara and Calacatta marble. I think that's why there has been an increase in issues with marble - for example, rust stains develop after water has saturated the stone due to the impurities in the stone.

I know someone who used Dolomite from F&D - she was happy with it. I can't remember if she confirmed the place of origin or not. It did have a bit more gray/taupe streaks in it - which I actually like in a dolomite tile. Her installer did have to reposition several hexagons in order to have consistent grout lines - but she said that she wasn't charged extra by her installer since it was less than 10 pieces. He did use some spacers to force some of the grout lines to be consistent in size instead of relying on the mosaic sheet to all be consistent.

If a good quality dolomite marble was used for the mosaic sheets, I think that $32 is actually a good price for the marble sheets. However, you can find it for less (you can also find sheets that are more expensive) - but will need to carefully hand select the sheets that you use + you may need to swap out a few hexagons (chipped edges/fissures/cracks).

It really depends on whether you want to have a quality mosaic tile installed or are fine with a few inconsistencies in order to pay quite a bit less per sheet. I decided to pay more in order to avoid some of the issues that would accompany mosaic sheets from a big box store.

You may not want marble in a shower unless you have the most skilled and up to date educated tile professional in your location, and buy top notch material. A poor quality product in the hands of a "30 years doing it" wrong guy, and you've wasted 20K.

I used marble from www.stonecenteronline.com for my master bath and a powder room. I would say I paid half of what you were quoted, for similar shape and material. You might check out their product online to see if they have the color and format you desire.

For the powder room I got a carrera marble small hex with a Greek key design border. I was really happy with the marble quality and the price, so I used the same company when I did our master bath.

The master design used both smaller format (2" square checkerboard for the shower floor) and large format (12" square, or it might have been 18" square, polished and honed for the walls and floor, repectively). I didn't look at every sheet or tile upon arrival - my contractor inspected pieces from each box, & we were satisfied. My contractor didn't have any issues with quality when he installed the tile, and I don't think a single piece came chipped.

Nota bene: I chose marble because it is natural, beautiful, & full of unique characteristics. I didn't have an expectation (or even a desire) that each marble piece would be a specific way in terms of color distribution or saturation. I also chose marble for my kitchen counter (& my island has a wooden butcher block) for the same reasons: these materials stand the test of time, and over the years the marble and wood will change beautifully in a way that reflects how we use the surfaces. You may be someone who prefers to be more in control of the visuals in your home, so my experience might not be as relevant to you.

That said, the marble quality from www.stonecenteronline.com was top notch and I would use the same company again in a heartbeat. Marble is all they do, and, in my experience, they really deliver.
