What is ideal in your opinion? As I see it, none are ideal. I’m assuming you’d say SS is ideal. There are cons to each, so I’m asking for opinions on those two options. Thanks

CR doesn't test kitchen sinks anymore but when it did, it rated enameled cast iron sinks somewhat higher than fireclay sinks. The cast iron sinks resisted staining worse than the fireclay but the fireclay was severely cracked when a 5 lb. weight -- simulating a pot -- was dropped on it.

Comparing the highest-rated, most common type (undermount) and length (33") sink on build.com shows that there are many more fireclay sinks available and at lower prices than cast iron BUT that the cast-iron sink owners appeared to rate their sinks higher.

My experience with a cast iron was dish breaking. It’s super hard and nonforgiving if you drop a wine glass or something slips out of your hands while cleaning up.

I'm not a fireclay fan. One chip and you're dead.

I have a fireclay and love it, no problems. I have the corresponding stainless grid that lines the bottom, so no chipping.

A softer metal sink won’t break, and is much easier on dishes and glasswear.

No experience with fireclay. I'd ask what happens if a heavy pot slips from your soapy hands? I guess a grid or mat would protect the sink, but isn't that another thing to get grubby and need cleaning?

I've had many cast iron sinks, and like them okay. They are durable, not impossible to chip but you really have to try. Scrubbing them back to bright white with Barkeepers Friends/etc doesn't take long.

Choice between these and other materials might depend on if it is a show kitchen or a working kitchen.
