Assuming you are talking about a normal/standard firebox? Not linear?

Your options are pretty limited.

Choose a different fireplace? Get rid of the hearth? Put the TV somewhere else?

There's a reason all of the photos you see with TVs over fireplaces usually have the fp at or near the floor. Even then, the TV is too high, but it is what it is. If you care at all about proportion, the TV shouldn't be wider than the fireplace either. I'm not sure what size TV you are talking about but you have 11' to work with (80" is 6'-8"). That's a monstrous TV if it actually is at the ceiling. An 80" TV, which would look ridiculous over that fireplace, is only 40" tall, which would put the top of the TV at 10'.

Throw the TV out, watch the fire, talk to the people you are with or read a book.

This is what we plan to use in our new build home. I don't know if it will work in your situation.

Fireplace Enclosure

+ Fireplace shall be installed at floor level with the horizontal vent directly out the back.

+ Below is the preferred installation configuration to comply with product specifications.

+ Top of the enclosure/mantle shall be as low as possible to accommodate HDTV above.
+ Mantle must be non-combustible material. Stone slab is preferred, Gray unoiled Soapstone.

+ Hearth is NOT required because fireplace has a top blower and we do NOT have vinyl flooring.

If you're building from scratch, make sure you have a different wall for the TV -- makes for better viewing height, allows a range of furniture arrangments, and allows art and other decor to be part of your space.

No TV on the fireplace please. It ends up too high.

IMO 18' is a ridulous height fo a ceiling and for sure in a room that size it will be totally out of proportion. Anew build gives you freedom to actually put a TV where it should go and that is not above any FP exceptmaybe a very low linear one which BTW will look bad on a 18' wall. I think you need some help with room proprtion for sure . I never like TV and FP in the same space since both are focal points so maybe strat by planning a media room and a LR .

The super news is that you have the perfect opportunity to make it exactly the way you want it. You are not moving into a house that you have to work around, you get to decide and create the space you want. That is wonderful. You are very lucky! There are many options and you can figure out which works for you.

A few ideas.. Maybe a Ribbon fireplace. Changing the fireplace to be smaller or slightly different might work.

What is the plan of your space? Can you do the tv on the side? I know loads of people do the tv over the fireplace and are ok with it. Personally - I dislike it .

Since it is a new build, you should be able to do anything.

My favorite is a corner fireplace with adjacent tv and windows so I can enjoy a fire and watch the snow falling.
