Help! What to do with these windows??

I am struggling with what to do with these windows. Center one is wider, other two are same width. Just painted walls and trim. If I were to hang drapes would I do three separate poles? This is an older house and while I want to add some color with some type of window treatment I don't want anything too stuffy. I looked at roman shades but they felt too modern.

In past valances were hung on window right under the molding which looked wrong

I have been searching for images like this that have windows with some space between them and can't find anything that has worked. All help would be much appreciated.

The trim around windows is so much of their appeal that I’d hate to cover it up with any window treatment. My vote is inside mount wooden or faux wood wide slat blinds - routeless - no holes in the slats. White color to blend with all the white trim in the room. A nice classic look that fits the style of windows & the space.

IMO roman shades are not really too modern but I do agree that inside mount is the right way to go but not wood blinds on those pretty windows . Waht do you need from the window treatment like privacy or light control ? If neiter of those are an issue I would do some faux inside mount roman shades in a print to work with your decor

Thank you both! Neither light control or privacy is a big concern. I am unhappy with how white the trim color is, so really don't want to emphasize the white. I am actually considering painting the chair rail the same color as the wall as a result, which feels wrong and right at the same time. I was really hoping for something more creamy for trim, but I am stuck with this for now. Will re-visit inside mount options. that you suggested. Room feels so cold to me right now.

I do like @Patricia Colwell Consulting suggestion of inside mount Roman shades. I hadn’t thought of that. The addition of fabric to complement the wall & trim color may change your dislike of the white trim because it will give your eye something else to focus on. I’d look at printed fabric– the print will add texture to all the solid colors in room. Sometimes all we need is a little time to adjust to changes made - it’s like getting a different hair style!

    Cafe curtains?

I would use an inside mount and let that trim show.

I dont like Roman shades. They dont really function as nicely as do some other options. They can be too fiddly to be practical.

Personally, i like the way it looks right now, but always want something to close off the windows at night.

And, I love the white trim!

I think drapery would just kill the nice vibe and be too much.

Love the white trim too, and your wall color! Hope you post pictures when you have your window treatments up.

I agree that inside mount shades are the best choice (and suggest painting out chair rail). How they look will be based on style and simple is better if you don’t want stuffy.

If interested, consider moving the floor lamp, and add a rug and art, as it’s important to have the big picture in mind.

pretty room! i like sheers mainly bc I hate when windows become black boxes at night — if it were me, I would find correctly sized sheers I liked and hang them with simple white tension rods that will disappear - agree that painting out the chair rail will help the room, I’d also add chandelier shades to cozy it up a bit

I’m surprised for all the hate for curtains with this group! I like the idea of Roman shades but I would get a bamboo or grass cloth texture to mimic the floor. Big chunky wood curtain rods. Linen toned drapes for softness and texture. Ikea is my favorite budget source for curtains. Lots of options up to 8’ long.

Well now I feel better about painting the chair rail! I think that will help a lot. I do like the relaxed Roman and London shades in the pictures above. Challenge here will be finding the right fabric and someone to make them (plus I think they will be incredibly expensive). I have searched online for drapes and agree with above that a sheer or a linen look would do- I just would love to add a little hint of color in a pattern. Will need to keep looking!

I REALLY appreciate all of your thoughts. I don't have anyone else to walk this through with me.

I agree with la la girl. I think these beautiful windows are calling out for white sheers, inside mount of course. Maybe a seeded voile rather than completely sheer, but not too fluffy or full.

Hallet & Co. can you post an example of your suggestion if possible. I have a relatively good sized home and I need all the tips I can get. I have a nook wiht 4 windows and I'm looking for ideas.

I love the windows in this photo and at first I thought someone would suggest a long rod and curtain panels that will give the illusion of one big window, but it would indeed hide all the beautiful paint color and trim. I like the though of the roman shades with the valance on the top. It looks soft and cute. With the shear London shade in a fabric, will the flowered print look bad shwoing outside window. I'm just curious. However, very pretty.

For sheer options - I’ve ordered from London Lace and Country Curtains over the years (I’ve lived in a lot of old bungalows with chunky trim 😅)

My saga continues. I have never been so paralyzed by something as trivial as curtains in my life. So I have decided that I do need something on window other than just an inset valance or shade. It just feels too casual to me.The one in the photo is just for an example. I tried to use tension rods to put a sheer under it but would need a very short sheer and that also feels wrong. You can see in the 2nd photo in my living room how I (incorrectly) hung curtains in the past, on the moulding itself. (That room will be for another day!) I included a picture of my very messy kitchen so you can see the vibe of the other room on this floor.

I did just paint the chair rail and that will help a little, I think, once curtains are up. I know when I hang art/pictures, re-do chair seats, etc it will look much better, but I don't want to do any of that until I get the window situation squared away. If I were to go with drapes I also am stuck on what color to go with. ARGH!

I appreciate all of your comments and am still working through your suggestions. THANK YOU!

If you cannot get an inside mount installation, do not do it. If you cannot get a window coevering that does the trick between light and privacy, do not do it. If you cannot get blinds or shades that enhance your home, do not do it.
