kitchen island countertop question

We are refreshing our kitchen by making the island all one level, adding new pendants, and changing the hardware.

We will not be changing the countertops on the perimeter. I need ideas on what will compliment the space.

Can you get the same quartz?

This time keep the edge profile simple, the same as the perimeter.

Remove the EAT sign, it just adds visual clutter.

That looks like a quartz counter. Is that color still around? that would be the easiest change. You could do a butcherblock top. Otherwise find a granite or another quartz that will compliment that color - maybe some nice pattern to it.

I would look at the soapstone availability . [they are all a bit different ] Soapstone has that nice durable, somewhat traditional [ but not too] feeling which would be appropriate for the space. a wood top can be nice.

here's wood. start looking around and bring in samples . maybe something warm like wood or the matte feel of soapstone would lead you to drop the pendant a bit....that might work out too.

    Chispa beat me to it.

See if you can get the same quartz for the leveled island…and, give it the same simple profile as the perimeter counters.

Also, yes…remove the kitchy/cutesy EAT sign.

Yes get the same counter as the perimeter. A different counter runs the risk of making your island look like it was from a different kitchen that was accidentally dropped in your kitchen.

Actually I think a different counter top from perimeter counter would give some additional character since there isn’t a lot of color going on. Butcher block or a darker quartz would make your new island stand out especially if it’s a wood based one.

Are you planning to paint the island or leave as wood? If painting it do an accent island if leaving wood the same counter as the perimeter. But not a change in cabinet and a different counter too many things going on and yes to removing word art anywhere

We’re not able to find the same quartz so looking for something that will complement the perimeter. The wood on the base of the island will remain the same color.

I was thinking a wood top but wondering from others how durable it is. If I don’t go in that direction I was thinking a darker tan to pull out the veining in the other areas.

Would you be willing to consider painting the island to match your cabinets? That gives you all kinds of options for a different countertop, including maybe green to pick up the view out your window and to complement the floor?

With wood floors and a wood island I wouldn't use a wood top. Look for a solid color quartz countertop that matches the base color of your perimeter countertop, or a solid dark color. Be sure to bring the samples home to look at in your light.

A black quartz or charcoal soapstone would be beautiful with the wood island and wood floors.

So interesting you say that. That’s what I was looking at today.

Very nice kitchen. I would not go with tan. It seems like a miss match to your current counters and a muddy choice alongside the wood base and wood floor. The dark sample you have in the most recent picture looks really nice.

Can you post a picture of the room that connects to and is in view of your kitchen? With an open concept, I think you need to consider color alongside all that can be viewed together - dining room, family room, whatever is in that opened area.

Jennifer the samples in the black/charcoal will be beautiful.

My first thought was black as well…honed granite, quartz, or soapstone. Add pendants and stools that tie in the base, counter, and perimeter.

Thank you! This is helpful. I have a hard time visualizing it all together and to be sure it all compliments the space.

Here’s the rooms attached to the kitchen. (Sorry for the messy space)

I agree something dark like the ones posted above. It’ll be really nice!

It's obviously down to taste, but with your adjacent dark table and medium toned floor, a dark top on a wood island would be too much contrast for me.

I understand you can't exactly match your perimeter counter but there have to be some quartz or Corian that are close, either with similar veining or a plain matching cream tone. Looking in from your eating area, I think the light top currently on your island keeps the center from being a dark hole.

OK, I am going to throw out something a little bit more funky as an idea. You probably don’t want to make this much of a change, but I thought it would propose it. Also, given that you didn’t post measurements, we are all just eyeballing your dimensions. What if you extended your island and then did a cross table at the same level with a different color countertop. I just recently saw a cool picture here on Houzz where they didn’t have a big enough slab so they raised part of it and it made for a very interesting island. It was not similar to yours. I will try and go find that picture. also, your quartz looks very much like LG via Terra brand. I think you might be able to find some thing that is similar enough. Off to look for a picture.

Definitely something to think about! Might be a little crazy for me.

I love all the pictures. I have been looking for inspiration and these are so helpful.

Aha, the extra pics are so helpful. Your sun room is stunning. And, I love the arched doorways. I think you have the makings of a beautiful space here you just need to figure out some shape, color, and finish issues.

It feels slightly like a make-shift dining room is encroaching on your kitchen. Do you want a longer island with seating at it instead of this table and chair set? If not, what do you think about getting rid of the rug and having a round table and chairs there in something other than a dark wood?

How many people eat at this table regularly and is this the only dining area in your home? Do you intend to keep the same dining room set? If so, I think a wood based, dark topped rectangular island in this space is too much with your wood floors and rectangular dark wood table and chairs.

Also, what about the linked pictures from @J Mig inspired you? Certain colors, arrangements, surfaces, textures?

With all that white you have unlimited options. Contrast is what I would go for. The bigger the better or it will look like a mistake.

Or you could just keep what you have? It looks nice. Also keep in mind that the national code on island outlets has CHANGED recently. It's a pain in my you know what.....read this article (posted below). Your island now has an outlet above the countertop....so it is good with NEC code changes. If you want to follow code, you'd need to do a pop up outlet. Outlets on island ends or under overhang is no long allowed.
