Grasses are more about movement and texture, rather than colour and form, so I like to be able to see the whole plant without it being pushed up against a similar sized shrub or herbaceous perennial. I don't mind seeing a froth of shorter plants around the base, but that airy blowing, drifting and waving on the breeze demands a specimen placement...either singly or in a clump. I am also pleased to interweave grasses with another plant with a similar lightness (such as gaura, flax, verbena rigida. And not to forget light. Grasses always look tremendous when backlit by sun, at least during some part of the day...so again, they do seem better when not squashed but allowed to have free movement from all sides.

Hopefully, Perenne, who has a beautiful selection which she uses with careful consideration re. placement and companions, (especially light), will offer some useful insight.
