How about no upper cabinets? Perhaps open shelves? An English country kitchen style might work, this DeVol kitchen is gorgeous:

In any case, I personally don't think cabinets to the ceiling or a big soffit is the answer. Having one or two cabinets with trim NOT going to the ceiling looks a lot more authentic. And the dust issue is totally overblown.

I do not agree about the dust issue but I do like those devol style kitchens and could be the prfect answer since eiter way the dust will be an issue but the shelves at least are reachable for dustingand I always love art in a kitchen so you will have plenty of wall space for some fab choices

Why on earth are you planning that high of a ceiling to begin with? You are the one causing yourself the problems here with that height.

It's a remodel @HU-350590897. Dropping the celing would be an option. In fact I did so for the bathroom next to the kitchen down to 3M to make it more efficient for the fan to extract the air.

3.5m is not crazy tall.. go up with your cabinets, some molding along ceiling line..

Kitchen is approx 3.6M wide and 3M deep. Openings to laundry/pantry and dining room as shown on floorplan below. Beyond the dining room through another large wall opening is the 4x4 living room.

Note: Walls shown in red are what I plan to add as stud walls in order to have a fridge space of 1M accross. If left flush with the existing wall, fridge space would be limited to 826mm.

Directions are not accurate, kitchen sink window actually faces North not South as shown on plan.

Note: Door to right is a bifold which is very akward with the fridge in that position. In order to open my fridge door 90 degrees, I have to close the bifold otherwise it gets in the way. I cannot open the fridge door more than 90 degrees to pull out drawers fully as the wall prevents this. One of the major motivations of this remodel is to move the fridge from this location.

In most of those DeVol pictures, are those cooktops without a range hood?

Aesthetically it's pleasing not to have anything on the wall like a cabinet or hood, but it wouldn't be practical for my style of cooking. My main focus is on the practicality of the design and making sure the layout works with all my work flows.

I require an externally vented hood. So once there's a hood (or cabinet concealing a hood) up on the wall, I may as well finish it off by having more uppers flanking the hood cabinet otherwise it'll look lonely by itself.

I supose it doesn't look too bad. I guess I have to spend the money either on framing and sheeting a soffit or on extra cabinets and fronts. So it's just a question of what looks better because either way, it's going to be wasted inaccessible space.

I have no idea if there are vent hoods in some of those photos.

But you don't need to have cabinets flanking a vent hood. Use a chimney style hood which looks best alone anyway.
