What is the cage system & its origin, why is it used?

In 2013+, designers are including an Italian cage system in landscaping and as features, I do not understand the thought behind these cages, why they are used, why the designers are using these so often today and where did this originate, what was this originally used for?

    Gabion walls (cage system) have been around for many years. It's purpose is to contain the rocks in a controlled way in order to retain soil behind them. They act as conventional retaining walls, only using natural stone & steel cages.

    They often use gabion walls to control erosion on river banks in Texas. I have been seeing them used more in residential settings too. It is an interesting idea.

    Looks like rough horsetail (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equisetum) - it looks nice but it can run rampant through an open garden...
