Nothing vinyl will match real wood. Either continue the same wood, slate look vinyl, or carpet again. Nothing wood grain or wood look in vinyl next to real wood, it will always look bad.

I was able to match wood-look tile to an oak tread staircase, but we did it in reverse order. I picked the tile first and then our wood floor guy matched the stair stain to the tile. I don't think anyone ever noticed they were going from tile to wood to tile.

You might be able to find an engineered wood floor that is a close match to your oak staircase.

Or do a contrasting material, like bamboo or cork.

chispa, I'll bet anyone walking barefoot would notice a difference going from tile to wood! We just put hardwood in our house, and there is a noticeable temperature difference when walking from the tiled bathroom to the wood in the hallway.

A few years ago I had a new oak staircase installed by a fabulous carpenter who only does stairs. I had Italian wood look porcelain for my entry way flooring. The carpenter who installed my stairs, carefully matched the wood stain to my wood look porcelain flooring. I think he did a nice match. Porcelain flooring is water resistant, durable and easy to clean. Best of luck on your journey.

I’m on the hunt for something durable if you have any advice on that… I haven’t bought carpet in years! Our downstairs is all hardwoods.

Is there a reason you don't want to use real oak floors to match the stairs?

It’s a possibility… I would have to refinish the steps and I’m not sure if I want to go through all of that as it’s a study/office & would take a lot longer to do.
Our home floors were refinished in a darker color a few years back but this area is only used by myself and my husband, not visible to the rest of the house

Why would you refinish the steps? Just have the new floors finished to math the steps - or go with a sharp enough contrast to look intentional.
