a question for my own knowledge..isn't this a cane and not an angel wing?..I thought angel wings have spots?..

Angel Wings Begonia is a common name for a lot of cane begonias. For instance, my wife brought home a cutting of a plant from work almost 50 years ago. I asked her what it was and she said her friend said it was an "Angel Wing Begonia". Many years later (out of the Navy, out of college, with two daughters and having some money once again), we were checking out a small privately owned nursery. Some beautiful cane like begonias in his small greenhouse and I asked the old man what they were. He said "Angel Wing Begonia". Whoa, they can't be the same name. It would be another 10 years when we had our first PC, dial-up modem, and I was exploring the internet to see what was out there when I stumbled into the Yahoo Begonia Group. That is when I found out a lot of these cool plants had real names and they had types.

I learned about cane types and the first "angel wing begonia" was Corallina de Lucerna and most folks called it Lucerna. Very old hybrid and in most everyone's collection. The second one was Sophie Cecile. Most call it Sophie and some want to spell it Sophia (like Sophia Loren). I had another one that has come and gone (find it here and there) and is a small leaf cane like begonia. The nickname was Trout Leaf Begonia, but its real name is Medora.

I've pretty much eliminated 'Lana' as a possibility because Lana doesn't have broad sillver stripes the way this one does. The silver on Lana is more like small, short silver slashes. I've come across a few people online who have this identical begonia and they don't know what it is either! I guess it will remain a mystery...

Deanna, I didn't see a photo in your last post. Did you forget it? Don't go by one photo to define a plant either. There is a lot of variation in the same plant, depending on where it is grown, the time of year, etc.

Angel Wing is more about the shape of the leaf, nothing to do with spots, stripes, or just plain green. The problem with the moniker of angel wings is it seems like they should be opposite leaves, not alternate leaves that begonias exhibit.

hc..ok 👍..I didn't think of Angel Wing pertaining to leaf shape..spots don't really relate to angels so I'm surprised it didn't occur to me the name is about the shape..

after writing on this post I needed to leave for my annual physical appointment..going to the other post now..
