dining room help please

last year

Hi everyone !! I am struggling to decide which color chandelier I should do. Hoping I can finally decide after hearing y’all’s input. Everything in my house is monotone and very light and airy. I attached the dining room and the chandelier finishes I can’t decide on. Also thought I should share that The art on the wall will go the ceiling and will be beige and white.

Are you set on that particular chandelier - and just want opinions re: which finish to purchase?

  • last year

Yes but open to other chandeliers

The seating is too tight. Two chairs each side and one on either end.

You need art ( can we see it?) and a rug (the LVP needs one), and as much as I love Visual Comfort, your room does not warrant a $7,000.00 chandelier.

Is the table centered in the room?

What are the measurements of the table?

You need to warm this room up.

Put some wood on the ceiling and go brass with fixtures.

I’d do black, but…since there are large openings into other rooms, can you see any other finishes from the dining room? If I were adhering to a monotone ideal, then I’d keep fixture finishes as similar as possible when they are in sight of each other.

You can see the living room chandelier which I was planning to do in bronze. Similar to the windows. The finishes in kitchen and are polished nickel. Attached is the formal living room which is still not finished. The coffee table is getting returned. Needs rugs etc

EDIT - my post (below) was drafted last night before you added other photos of your home. Apparently, I forgot to hit the "submit" button - and just hit it a few minutes ago.

Now that I've seen more of your home, it's very nice - and easily could "warrant" a $7,000 light fixture.

If it is a Chinese made light fixture, it does seem like almost $8,000 could be spent on a higher quality fixture. RL Relocation is apparently in the lighting industry - so, I would trust her judgment about the quality of the fixture. It does make sense to have the art up on the walls (at least) before selecting your fixture.

I also see that there is another comment about the price of the light fixture - it really isn't our place to have an opinion on what is too much money to spend. $8,000 to the OP may = $1,000 (or less) to another user (based upon level of income).

    ORIGINAL COMMENT:

I am not sure how anyone - based upon the one photo shown - would make a statement that your dining room does not warrant a $7,000 chandelier.

First, we know nothing about your home.

Second, we know nothing about your income.

Third, the above two items are none of our business.

Only you know if a $7,000 light fixture is a good way for you to spend your money. It's your decision - and no one should judge you, or your home, on this site.

I am sorry that someone posted the above comment. There is no reason for it. Your dining room looks like it belongs in a nice home. I know someone who put a $120,000 light fixture over the dining room table in their second home in Palm Desert. The house is nice - but the dining area is not a separate room - with the tall ceilings that yours has. The dining area is open to the living room - and doesn't take up a huge amount of space. My SO's dad said that he set an "unlimited budget" to make a few renovations + furnish the house/decorate the house - and that she exceeded it!

However, he has accumulated a lot of money over his lifetime. He was born (and grew up) in the projects in Chicago until high school - he then went to Univ of Illinois (he said that back then, they took any resident of Illinois who graduated from high school basically) - and wound up owning a huge company (which he sold - repurchased - and grew it more before selling it a second time) - and then started a small real estate development company.

I had no idea that my SO's dad had so much wealth (or that he had grown up being part of a family like that) - nothing about him came across that way when I first was getting to know him. I knew that he did well at the real estate development company that he had started - but I didn't know the extent because he wasn't "showy" - and we didn't discuss money (it wasn't any of my business).

Of course, when he came to the city where I lived to visit - and his dad sent the private jet to take us out to CA + I saw his dad's and his stepmom's new house (next door to Jennifer Aniston) - I obviously knew that his family had quite a bit of money.

If you can afford the light fixture - and you love it - there is no reason you shouldn't buy it. Nothing about that light fixture would look out of place in your dining room.

However, if you'd still like some other ideas, we'd need to know a bit more about your vision for the room + the design style for the rest of your home.

With your tall ceilings + the color of your walls, I feel like it could get "lost" in the room. However, it's a nice looking light fixture - if you are adding some colorful large art in the room, maybe it works well because you don't plan on it being the "star" of the room. However, I believe that you mentioned above that the art will be beige and white (I haven't gone back and re-read your post).

If you want the chandelier to be the "star" = focal point of the room - I personally feel like this particular one won't be that. With an almost $8,000 budget (at least - based on the price of the current fixture), I feel like you could find one that makes more of a statement.

But I'm not a designer - so, this is only the opinion of a lay person = doesn't hold much weight!

Also - while I like the dining chairs, I agree with RL Relocation that something feels "off " about them to me. They seem to overpower the table or something. Maybe it's because the arms of the chairs appear to be the same height - which doesn't allow them to be pushed a bit under the top of the table. The chairs seem to stick out a bit too much.

Again, just an opinion from someone who doesn't have any expertise in design!

    Good morning @irinatee!

Great overall feedback on this thread so far. 96" x 40" should warrant a rectangular canopy of about 70" x 18" or so. Can also see a square canopy fitting well with your space. Along with the art comments would be a good guide for what kind of color chandelier would fit well. With that being said here are a few chandelier suggestions that would look great in your dining room:

    Cloud Pendant Lights Chandelier

    Napa Pendant Lights Chandelier

    Ferraro Pendant Lights Chandelier

Hope this helps! Have a good week!
