Painting backsplash and new runner?

I don't want to do a complete kitchen overhaul, just some small things here and there. What color should I paint this backsplash? The same white as the wall?

And if I were to get a long oriental ruggable runner instead of the small red one, what color choices would look good?

Thank you for your advice and anything else I didn't mention!

Preferably if you can, remove the backsplash and repair the wall. Paint it same color as the walls. It appears there is already a 4-inch backsplash from the countertop. I would look for a runner rug that pulls in just a bit the color from the countertop.

Consider the pattern in your countertops and cabinets (grain). A solid color backsplash would be best so you don’t have patterns fighting each other Looks like you already have a 4” backsplash, so don’t add tile above it. Removing the tile and painting that area the wall color could work. I don’t think you need a runner. I would declutter the counters a bit, too.

i see a little of this color in the counter. I guess it doesnt hurt to paint the splash but the mosaic??? not sure about that appearance no matter if painted .....wont it be busy. ? .but if you really dont want to demolish then I can see putting a little effort into the paint. Anyway..I like to paint....so there you go.....here's the color I'd look for .....

rug idea ...very nice w the splash and these will work w your counter. I'd get nickel hardware on the cabs I think.

@Catherine Piaskowski, Consider @bearbev ’s advice to simply remove the tile and live with the counter backsplash you already have. The result will give you a much more updated look. While you are at it, consider painting the trim around the window the same color as the wall. Right now it is stained a dark color that does not really look great with the cabinets.

For the runner I’d be tempted to choose a shade of blue that has a little teal or green in it to vibe with the yellow in the cabinets.

That looks like it could possibly be glass tile - or maybe you’ll be lucky and it’ll be even peel and stick. If it is glass make sure to use eye protection and cut-proof construction gloves when removing it. Ask me how I know? 😂 🪛🩸🩺

I agree remove the tile repair the wall then paint that area but as for color who knows and I hate rugs in kitchens maybe an antifatigue one but I think they are a tripping hazard and one more thing to have to constantly clean . Get rid of anything on the counter that is not constantly used and maybe change the light bulbs in all the fixtures to LED 4000K The kitchen is tiny drk and cluttered so address all of that and IMO a dark rug just adds to the dark.
