New island cabinets have a gap under countertop

We had the half of our island that was just empty space ripped out and cabinets put in for more storage. Turns out they tiled around the island before putting the kitchen cabinets in, so when the guy measured, he measured from the tile to the bottom of the counter like any normal person would. When they ripped it out, we saw it was just floor, no tile. There is now a 1/2 inch gap between the new cabinets and the granite counter and I'm wondering if this is OK or should we make them take them out so we can put tile down then put them back in, or is there is any other way to fix it, or if it's OK and just leave it. He has shims in it right now but is coming back to caulk and trim it

I assumd they removed the old countertop to do this - is that correct?

What is supporting the countertop where it is over the new part of the cabinet, where you show the 1 cm gap?

Do the photos show the short ends of the island, with the original half of the island on one side and the new half on the other side? Did the new cabinet guy put that sheetrock and framing lumber in there, or was it in there originally, and what will cover it up?

The first photo appears to show a different countertop overhang on the old and new sides. Is the overhang consistent throughout, or does it vary?

Do the old and new halves visually line up, in elevation? Look at the bottom of the cabinet. Do the finish and door styles match, from old to new?

What does it look like, where the base of the cabinet meets the tile? Is there a visible gap?

It is common enough for tile to be set up to, rather than extend under, base cabinets. The cabinet guys would know that. They would have or should have figured out the situation, and built the new cabinet to the required dimension. Then they’d normally shim the cabinet base to get the new half exactly level with the old half, before replacing the countertop.

The top must be supported by shims. How much does the top overhang the cabinets please?
