Above or below the graft?

Dear rose friends — I thought my New Dawn was sprouting from below the graft, but I dug around it to look, and now I’m not so sure. What do you think?

Helen, while you are attempting to post a photo, if your New Dawn is own root there is no graft, nor root stock. Any new shoot, wherever it is emerging is true to be New Dawn and nothing else. Sometimes an own root looks like it was grafted. The original source of your New Dawn could confirm its type, whether grafted (which is not very likely), or own root.

New Dawn is so vigorous grown own root I cannot imagine how much more vigorous, to the point of becoming hard to keep from growing into a giant of a climber, it would get to be if grafted.

Thanks for your comment Moses, you’re always so generous with your knowledge. I do remember that it was a Monrovia plant that I got at Lowe’s. I found a Reddit post that suggested it’s probably own root and, as you said, just doing really well.

I filled in the hole on Monday so it wouldn’t suffer in the cold that has just arrived, so I can’t take another picture of the roots.

Helen, your New Dawn is growing very well. Those basal growths are husky, and the growth of the entire bush is great. Are you aware that ND can get huge and will need a good support to accommodate its growth. What have you in mind?

I have ordered a heavy duty 7 foot tuteur which I hoped would be here by now so I could begin thinking about the shape. I’m so glad you gave it a bill of good health!
