Need design ideas for the family room to go with the sectional

last year
last modified: last year

Hello

I am looking for some design ideas for my famioyroom if I go with the Crate and Barrel Axis Sectional sofa in fabric Douglas Ice. Picture attached. It is a warm gray but up close it is gray with black. I have no idea what to do for a rug and other furniture, curtains in the room. I like muted, modern but neutral colors. Any help is appreciated! Links to recommendations would be great too!

My other option was Pottery Barn Big Sur sofa in Performance Everyday Linen because I did want more of a tan rather than gray sectional. But I'm not sure if this fabric will be cozy. Anyone with this sofa and photos of your room. Thanks!

Edit - This is not a picture of my room. The room is 24x26 with high catherdral ceiling. Dark wood floors. On one side stone fireplace to top of catherdral ceiling. tv on another wall. french doors on other 2 walls. (The sectional will not sit against the walls but in towards the center of the room. My style is traditional, transitional, neutral decor. I have kids and would like a sofa table with slide-in cushion seating underneath for eating in the room. Saw one at Restoraion hardware but do I have to match wood of a coffee table? The biggest concern is what rug will match this sofa. Would like a nicer rug and furniture than something at wayfair or target but also don't want to spend 5K

That sectional looks super large. How large is the room? And how many doors and windows are in the room that the sectional can’t block?

I believe no one is replying because there is almost no information to go on - just a picture of a sectional you might buy and ”the room is large.”

How about pictures of the room so we can see it. How many people will be using this room? And using it for what? Entertaining guests? TV? Reading? Playing games? Playing the piano/listening to music? Snoozing? Do you have small children + playpen/toys/etc? Pets?

Is there a fireplace? Large exits and entries like patio doors that you need to allow traffic patterns for? What other furniture do you have/want to place here? Large items like entertainment centers, fish tanks, a piano, bookcases, family antiques, etc?

What’s the style of your home and/or your personal style? Traditional? Farmhouse? Contemporary? Other?

What’s the floor surface - looks like hardwood now? Is it staying or being replaced? Or maybe you have area rugs. How about window treatments?

Unlimited decorating funds or budget decor?

Why not go to a mid/high end furniture store and look at furniture brands that give you a much wider fabric selection?

I cannot tell how much I dislike sectional seating .2 people have an armrest all the rest lined up like a kids birthday party to play pin the tail on the donkey . Armrests = comfort . A sofa 2 chaiirs gives you 5 seats 4 of which an have an arm rest . That combo also allows for rearranging the room from time to time like often for the Christams tree . Do you have kids ? If so IMO never fabric unless a slipcover that can go in the wash and buy 2 . I love leather in a FR spills wipe off, grease does not leave a stain just practical. You can have a leather sofa and some indoor / outdoor fabric for some chairs if you like some print .I agree we need more ingo if you really want constructive help. BTW no chaise ever in a space where you might have guests Ottomans are great they also in a pinch can be used for kids to sit on

Most areas have their own local mid/high end furniture stores.

In Los Angeles I used to like Cisco Furniture and HD Buttercup.

In southwest FL you have Norris, Robb & Stucky and Clive Daniel.

The space requires an area rug.

A coffee table with a lift top would allow people to eat in the area.

You could also consider an ottoman/coffee table that would work with the sectional.

Sectionals come in more current configurations.

A big ottoman is more functional than a coffee table. Sectionals | Anabei

Please never invite Patricia to your home. It would do her in to have to sit on a sectional! I LOVE sectionals and especially those with wedge corners, which i think are more practical than squared off corners or an attached chaise. That sectional would sit a group nicely or a few family members lounging on it. It is neutral enough that many area rugs would work. You haven't indicated colors you love that we could try.

By an eating table, do you mean a console table behind it with pull out stools kind of like this?

yes this is what I mean by onsile table. D o I have to match the console table wood to the coffe table? will that look best?

No, but they should complement each other...and as some have suggested, maybe a large ottoman instead of a wood coffee table. If both are wood, then if they don't match, I would try to get something else into the room that matches one or the other, so you don't have several random wood pieces. Also, one could be painted wood, or have a stone top, etc. I love this one that Beverly posted...both a place for feet and a table top. Looks like the woods aren't exact matches but look good together, and then there is a white chest under the tv for relief from too much wood.

Aside from color, that sectional is an oddly less useful shape than many sectionals ( which do all have drawbacks as noted). Its curved in at both ends with short “ legs”so it is less like that people sitting at the arm ends will have leg room if someone sits at the end-ish part of the long run. And very difficult to use a coffee table for everyone. So really a lot of wasted , inflexible seating.

Agree that floorplan info on the room dimensions , walls, doorways is needed as well as what is purpose of room. Surely not for TV.

Not really questioning who likes a sectional and who doesn't. I'm looking for design inspiration to match fabric for sofa, curtains and wood tones for console table, coffee table etc. Honestly this is not even the layout of the sectional that I will be getting just the same style and fabric color. Thanks.

Since you want a console table with stools, why don't you find one you love and start there? Post a pic of it and a floorplan of the room, colors you like, maybe pics of other rooms in your home, or this room so people can get an idea of your colors and style.

Big decisions and comes down to research and comparing. The color decision can be driven by the flooring/rug, decor and practical needs. The room‘s and sectional‘s configurations will dictate other furniture choices and suggest providing a picture of room when sectional is in place and you’ll receive more helpful advice in that regard. If not already done: compare fabrics’ quality and care and especially construction/comfort. Fyi: I quickly searched your C&B choice on line and there were lots of comments, so it might be helpful to do for both brands.

Sorry then. You asked about furniture and rug , among other things, to go with sectional & showed a specifically shaped sectional as well as its color.

Forgot to mention accessorizing and alot depends on legwork. Maybe take some time to look on line and when you see “components” in rooms that you like, save for reference. You’ll start to see a trend and decisions will be easier.

Hold off buying a rug, as its size is an important factor - decide on furniture placement first.

There are so many rug options and suggest defining a preferred style and compare content and prices.

For design inspiration we use solid neutral fabrics in the seating and add color and texture with Tribal textiles. We have Kilim throw pillows, Persion rug ottomans, Turkish carpets, etc. Ours have some blues in the pattern which we love as our accent color. One teal blue velvet armchair.

    Hopefully some ideas for you.
