It is helpful

last modified: last year

In the Spring and in the Fall I am moving large filled pots having perennials i.e. first bringing them out of the garage and then back in, soon to happen, for the upcoming winter. It became just too much for me physically. So a few years ago I purchased this cart. It has been a worthwhile acquisition.

Ah yes, I have a similar contraption...BUT, it does require a clear and flat run...which, in my garden, turns out to be an impossible ask. Moving enough pots to get a decent path to the greenhouse is almost as bad as just barging through the chaos, while clutching some filthy, gigantic terracotta pot. I did, at least, acquire a large leather apron to protect my assortment of handknits and usually inappropriate frocks.

It's a good thing I can leave my planted containers outside all winter. Most are very large or of frost proof ceramic so very heavy to move empty, let alone filled and planted! Getting them up onto the cart would be a major ordeal. And I also have no garage or basement in which to store them :-))

I do use my collapsible shopping cart to shift bags of potting soil and other heavy items from my car through to my tiny little garden area. And if I had a real garden to play with, I'm sure I'd find a heavy duty cart very useful.

" we have a hand truck and wheelbarrow too..a hand truck is the best to move stones "

I call my hand truck my "rock mover"!

Hey @callirhoe123, I am not sure I can help you as I am in Canada and so I purchased it from a Canadian company.

Yes, a cart is helpful. As is this contraption: Pot Lifter | Use to Light Heavy Pots | Kinsman Garden

DH and use this thing to lift a couple of heavy planters. Works great. Downside is you need two people, but it's much safer than trying to lift a heavy pot yourself.

My garden cart picture above is strictly used to move filled containers. It is perfect for this specific task as it is very low to the ground (with almost no edge height) which allows me to not have to lift too high a pot like this on to it.

And with useable surface being 22" wide and 40" long it can accommodate any pot I have every used.

(For the longest time I made due with a traditional wheel barrow but for now obvious reasons it isn't nearly as good for this job as my pull/push cart).

It might be hard to put the heavy pot on the cart. In that case, a dolly could help .

Given that my cart is quite low to the ground (unlike say a wheelbarrow) it is okay.

(A dolly would not work as the base likely wouldn't be large enough for many of my pots and say for that Japanese Maple, it's branches would be squashed against the dolly :( )

    Today:

I have been waiting for a killing frost but the "best" it has been was -3C/27F a week ago. And I like putting away these potted perennials when the soil is relatively dry, which it is right now.
